A diplomatic and personal royal shift might finally bring the estranged Sussex family back onto British soil. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from official royal duties in 2020, occasionally returning to the United Kingdom for special occasions. However, recent developments indicate that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are permanently returning with their young children to establish a British home, with no set location in sight yet.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are planning to move back to the United Kingdom, but they are not heading back to royal duties. As reported by PEOPLE, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to relocate with 7-year-old Prince Archie and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet to the United Kingdom for an extended period. All details, including the new residential address and the name of the school, have not been revealed.

Beginning this August, the children were enrolled in a local school, and it is assumed their school will begin in September.  Prince Harry wants his children to grow up experiencing British culture. The family will maintain their primary residence in Montecito, California. This strategic move secured their first private home base in Britain since surrendering Frogmore Cottage in 2023.

King Charles III was informed of these relocation plans on August 16, 2026. As reported by PEOPLE, the King clarified that their status as non-working members of the royal family remains unchanged. The family of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will strictly operate as private citizens without official duties or state-funded public responsibilities.

Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their royal roles, he has visited the United Kingdom over 10 times, whereas Markle has returned 4 times. In April 2022, the couple made a secret visit to Windsor en route to the Invictus Games. During that quiet pitstop, they met privately with Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III.

In June 2022, they brought Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. Later in September 2022, they attended European charity events before extending their stay following the Queen's passing. They subsequently stood alongside the royal family during the funeral and greeted public mourners at Windsor Castle.

Most recently, in July 2026, the family visited Highgrove House for a private reunion hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla. That low-key visit marked the King's first reunion with his grandchildren in 4 years. This successful summer trip ultimately paved the way for their current, possibly permanent UK housing strategy. Ultimately, establishing this British residence allows Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to raise their children closer to family while preserving their private autonomy.
