When Matthew Perry Saved His ‘Friends’ Character From Getting Doomed by the Show’s Writers

Through the 90s sitcom: Friends, Matthew Perry regularly brought a smile to viewers’ faces with his witty one-liners. The recently deceased actor who left behind an immortal legacy was the perfect man for the job. While Chandler’s blend of quick wit and vulnerability made him a creative genius, Perry turned Chandler Bing into an iconic character who served as the quintessential ‘lovable goofball’ of the Central Perk gang. However, one plot twist that the show’s writers were planning could have changed it all

Thankfully, Perry intervened and stopped that from happening.

How did Matthew Perry rescue Chandler Bing?

In an interview with TMZ shared on YouTube, a guest actress Lisa Cash revealed an incident that occurred during the shooting of Friends’ fifth season. The writers had written a scene in which Chandler was going to cheat on Monica. However, Perry felt that this would severely damage his image for an audience that had come to adore Chandler and convinced them not to do so. 

In the episode, Chandler and Monica had taken a trip to Vegas, where they got into a lover’s spat. This would lead to him being unfaithful to her by getting intimate with a housekeeping maid played by Cash. Since Perry felt that viewers would “never forgive him if this happened, he persuaded the writers a day before the shoot. Cash agreed that he was probably right about doing so.

One of the main reasons Friends was deemed a megahit was its ability to depict the heartwarming bonds between the characters through exceptional scriptwriting. Not to forget the dialogues which are a part of popular culture to this day. Interestingly, many of Chandler’s clever lines were born from the wit of Matthew Perry himself. Only he held this unique privilege among the six actors because of his legendary humor.

Often, the writers would accept his suggestions like in the case mentioned earlier. However, sometimes, scenes that he felt were ‘stupid’ were kept in regardless. Moreover, on numerous occasions, he also spontaneously improvised during filming. The Serving Sara actor’s creative input held significant weight despite the crew having multiple adept writers.
