When ‘Friends’ Sitcom’s Most Mysterious Character Was Finally Unveiled
One of the main reasons Friends became the most beloved sitcom of all time was the distinct personalities of each of the six friends. Together, their interactions created a blend of relatable human dynamics and timeless comedy. While some, like Ross and Phoebe, were socially awkward and quirky, others, like Rachel and Joey, were outgoing and carefree. Chandler was the funny one, while Monica took charge as the responsible one.
Besides these main characters, supporting characters were just as beloved by the show’s viewers. Once in a while, some shadowy characters appeared that fans knew nothing about. Yet, their short appearances were remembered for decades.

One of the only characters whose face viewers never saw was the man who lived in Ross’ apartment before him. The enigma of ‘The Ugly Naked Guy’, was prolonged for years since his name did not even appear in the show’s credits. In 2016, HuffPost finally hunted down the actor behind the character, Jon Haugen, to ask him about his character and the reason behind his absence from the show’s credits.
It turns out the creators did not want any actor to be given that title and left it alone as they did with another sensitive subject. Besides that, Haugen had withheld his identity because of Warner Brothers’ wishes, who wanted “everybody to have a guess” at who he was.
So both Haugen and Warner Brothers decided to keep “it mellow.” But Haugen’s character’s appearances on the show were anything but mellow.
How did David Schwimmer help Haugen navigate a tricky scene?

In Season 5, when Haugen and Schwimmer had to shoot ‘The Ugly Naked Guy’s’ second and last appearance, Hagen felt shy. Because 500 people were going to be watching both men “in boxers.” But the now 56-year-old treated Haugen like a “brother” and helped him “feel comfortable.” Not only Schwimmer, but Haugen revealed that all the actors treated him “like family.”
In his first appearance in the third season, ‘The Ugly Naked Guy’ was simply the unclad man living across Monica’s apartment. But by the time he left the show, the characters had made dozens of hilarious quips at his expense. And the viewers loved it.
