As Tinseltown prepares to garb themselves in couture drama for the upcoming Met Gala this Monday, besides keeping their eyes out for fashion contenders, the attendees also have to abide by some hardbound rules for the event. Not singular to this, but the guidelines are strictly followed every year. One such rule that the fashion soiree thus follows is the no onion and garlic theory. 

It might seem a bit of a stretch for the common, but it has its rationale and attendees do not have the privilege to challenge them without risking exclusion from future guest lists. 

The Met Gala is not any run-of-the-mill event, and its regulations reflect the not-so-average nature of it. Following the red carpet spectacle, attendees generally proceed to the cocktail hour and official dinner. But according to The New York Post's report from 2016, certain foods are banned from the venue at Anna Wintour's behest, with onion and garlic topping the list. This rule aims to prevent any unpleasant breath odors. However, it does not stop there. 

A former Vogue employee disclosed that parsley is also forbidden because of its propensity to lodge in teeth. Additionally, bruschetta is off the menu to prevent spills on the stars' extravagant attire. While these regulations may appear ridiculous, they serve a purpose. In 2016, Karlie Kloss reportedly had to shorten her floor-length Met Gala gown to a mini-dress after red wine stained its white fabric. Thus, the rules are designed to prevent mishaps, since in the world of the Met Gala, fashion is the ultimate casualty.

Interestingly, though, this is not the only unique regulation at the Met Gala as the others might shock the audience even more.

As the audience gears up to witness the biggest fashion event of the year with the Met Gala guide chart on May 6, there is much to know about what goes behind the curtain before it pulls up. While the onion and garlic rule is a shocker for most, the list does not end there. Reportedly, the event also does not permit selfies and social media usage as per a notice from 2015 that was sent out to the guests. The rule was implemented to narrow down on celebrities who remain stuck on phones at the gala. 

Besides these, the gala follows strict age restrictions from 2018. A spokesperson of the event reasoned the rule labeling the event inappropriate for “people under 18”. Moreover, within the arena of the museum, smoking has been strictly prohibited since 2018 because of complaints from members and donors. Lastly, the seating arrangements at the Gala are very meticulous and cannot be meddled with. Hence, for those assuming the onion and garlic rule as excess, it is only the tip of the iceberg.
