Kiss of the Spider Woman is a Bill Condon-directed, Jennifer Lopez feature take on Broadway musical by Harold Prince, based on Manuel Puig’s 1976 Argentine novel and the book by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb’s songs. Though the title might suggest a connection with Spider-Man, Kiss of the Spider Woman is not directly tied to the Marvel Comics character. The original story is set in a Brazilian correctional facility.
The novel follows two cellmates during the military power. One of them, who identifies as a queer, recounts stories of a fictional movie, including one about a “Spider Woman.” A Spider Woman is shown as a character who can hunt down their prey with a kiss. Therefore, even though it might seem too telling, Kiss of the Spider-Man does not revolve around the MCU’s Spidey and has no links with the Spider-Man-centric slate of releases awaiting the comic pipeline.
That said, what is the exact plot of the forthcoming film adaptation of Kiss of the Spider Woman?
The plot of Kiss of the Spider Woman
According to an exclusive Deadline report, details are being pieced together about the Kiss of the Spider Woman. But from what has been known, the film follows Valentin and Luis, two cellmates in a military-run 1983 Argentina. Luis is a queer widow dresser who tells Valentin the stories of his favorite actress who starred in many musicals, Ingrid Luna.
Kiss of the Spider Woman, the Broadway musical, was reportedly preceded by its original source material—the 1976 novel by Manuel Puig—and the 1985 Hector Babenco-directed movie that won William Hurt the Best Actor Oscar. The 2025 film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2025. Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, and LD Entertainment are reportedly in final talks over the acquisition of the North American distribution rights to the film.
