Henry Cavill has been the face of Superman for more than a decade. The caped Kryptonian from Zack Snyder’s DCEU received mixed reviews from critics. However, a huge section of fans loved the new grim take on the character. It was good until the DCEU parted ways with Snyder and decided to go for a reboot. The new DC Studios led by James Gunn and Peter Safran took the decision to recast Cavill, which expectedly did not go well with fans.

James Gunn’s decision to replace Henry Cavill as Superman sparked controversy and division within the DC film community. Since the December 2022 announcement, fans have expressed their emotions of anger, disappointment, and sadness at the loss of their beloved Man of Steel. Despite facing backlash, Gunn has remained firm in his vision for the future of DC, showing no signs of changing his stance.

The Guardians of the Galaxy director, however, has moved ahead with his new movie Superman: Legacy kicking off his new universe. He has already found a replacement for Henry Cavill, too. However, fans are not stopping at anything. From comeback theories to a multiverse arc, everything is being proposed to Gunn. However, now a fan has suggested an interesting approach. What if Cavill returns to the film but not as the titular Superman himself?

A fan wonders if Gunn will give Cavill a chance, at least as Jor-El, father to Kal-El, aka Superman. Fans believe that it will be a good way to showcase the passing of the torch as well as preserve Cavill’s legacy. It could also be a symbolic manner of “closure” for the fans. Precisely in the same way that Henry Cavill handed over his Netflix’s The Witcher role to Liam Hemsworth.

However, although a few fans agreed to the proposal, a large section disagreed. A variety of reasons explained why they never want Cavill to return to the DCU.

Henry Cavill is perfect as Superman, so why cast him as anybody else?

Although the proposal expects to hand a meaningful end to Henry Cavill’s run as the titular character, fans will see him only as Superman and nothing else! They echoed their sentiments that Gunn and co. had snubbed the 40-year-old actor roughly, but the ship has sailed. If the actor were to return to the new DC, then why not return as Superman himself questioned fans? Moreover, many believe that DC has already taken the turn and thus bringing back the original actor only as a side character will be disrespectful.

James Gunn announced that he is moving ahead with a new actor and storyline for his Superman: Legacy. He also added that his new film has a script ready and shall release as expected despite ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes. Furthermore, his new movie will serve as a tribute to all previous iterations of the character with a balanced story.
