Hollywood works in ways that most people do not even realize. One might think they are just heading to the movies for a fun time, but behind the scenes, there is a whole lot of strategy that goes on. At the end of the day, it is less about the art and more about the business side of things at the box office. And one thing that an average moviegoer might not know is the concept of Dump Months.

These are the months when the biggies in Hollywood pull all the strings behind the scenes, and fans just ride along without even realizing it.

It is never a guarantee whether one will leave the theater feeling completely satisfied or wishing they could get those few hours of their life back. But there are certain months when, if you go to the movies, you will most likely feel disappointed. These are the dreaded Dump Months—mostly January and February. This is when Hollywood dumps its weakest movies into theaters, with little to no fanfare.

Through this strategy, they save all the big bucks for the summer blockbusters. This year, some of the worst movies got dumped during these two months—including Sydney Sweeney's Madame Web, Henry Cavill's Argylle, Jenna Ortega’s Miller’s Girl, and more. But that said, not every movie that lands in these unlucky months is a total disaster. A major example of this came from Ryan Reynolds a few years back.

Reynolds may have had the biggest hit of his career this year, but back in 2016, he completely defied the odds at the box office.

After X-Men Origins: Wolverine completely butchered Deadpool, many fans thought they would never get the proper live-action Merc with a Mouth. But then, in 2014, 20th Century Fox decided to take a gamble and green-light a Deadpool movie. Despite fans' anticipation to see Ryan Reynolds as the wisecracking hero, Fox was still a little hesitant about jumping into the world of R-rated superhero movies.

They were especially nervous because Deadpool had to go head-to-head with the family-friendly Marvel Cinematic Universe. Nonetheless, even though Deadpool came out in February 2016, right in the middle of those unfortunate Dump Months, it still ended up becoming one of the highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. And now, here we are—Deadpool is officially in the billion-dollar club, too.
