'Venom: The Last Dance' vs 'Joker: Folie à deux'- Can The Marvel Elsewhere Anti-Hero Beat $200 Million Clown Prince?
2024 might still be a great year for sequels unless it is Joker 2. While Deadpool & Wolverine just showed us that the sky's still the limit for the Superhero genre, Joker: Folie à Deux showed us that the floor no longer exists. The weight remains dominated by Marvel, with DC struggling to regain footing. However, Venom: The Last Dance is poised to shake things up. Early indications suggest another hit for Marvel's extended family.
With Venom joining the 2024 roster, Marvel's reign shows no signs of slowing. Although part of Sony's franchise, its ties to the MCU are undeniable.
Venom: The Last Dance outpaces Joker 2 in box office records

Joker: Folie à Deux had a disappointing US opening weekend, grossing $37.8 million, less than half of its predecessor's haul. Industry expectations were unmet, with projections suggesting a $65 million debut. The underperformance raised concerns about DC's cinematic momentum and the appeal of its iconic characters. Moreover, there was no elsewhere DC substitute fans could resort to.
In contrast, Venom: The Last Dance managed to open to $51 million from 4,131 theatres in North America. Although it marked the lowest debut for movies of the genre, the Marvel adjacent’s success continues to overshadow DC's efforts. The Venom saga continues to outpace DC's Joker franchise at the box office, underscoring Marvel's comparative commercial dominance over DC's troubled anti-hero endeavors.
Apart from commercial numbers, the audience's perception also favors Venom: The Last Dance over the DC flop.

Venom: The Last Dance and Joker: Folie à Deux have received vastly different audience receptions. Although not completely satisfactory to fans who have witnessed DC at its peak, Venom 3 still held a 37% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, outpacing Joker's 32%. IMDb scores also favor the former, with a decent 6.2 out of 10 compared to Joker 2's sluggish 5.6. The metrics thus, have made it clear which has resonated better with the viewers.
Google ratings further emphasize the disparity and the appeal between the two movies. While Venom: The Last Dance secured a good 4.2/5 and the DC mishap suffered a dismal 1.8/5. Although it is too early to compare the former’s rating given its recent release, the reviews would remain above or at par with the DC sequel to make it a fair fight. However messy, Venom 3 turned out to be a fun and fitting end to the Venom trilogy, instead of a three hours-long torture to the audience.
