Controversies surrounding the royal family are not new, but this time, it is not about “who said what“; it is more about “who clicked what.” Both amateur detectives and photo specialists are digging into pretty much every image the royals have produced till now. What began with Kate Middleton has now shifted to include the Sussexes as well. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s second pregnancy announcement has been unfairly put under the microscope, with baseless claims of photoshopping pregnancy images.

Despite all the gossip and drama, the Sussexes shrugged it off and kept on shining a light on some amazing people who are making a real difference out there.

Last Thursday, the Archewell Foundation announced that Dr. Joy Buolamwini won the 2024 NAACP- Archewell Foundation Digital Civil Rights Award. The award was for her tireless advocacy in tackling racist and sexist biases in artificial intelligence. The Sussexes personally shared the news with Buolamwini through a video shared on their Archewell Foundation website. Both Markle and Prince Harry wrapped the Unmasking AI author in a congratulatory hug.

It looked like the meetup went down at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas, where Markle joined a woman safety panel, given the same outfit. The panel shared findings from a new study by Moms First and the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, revealing that the portrayal of mothers on television does not quite match reality. At the SXSW discussion, the Duchess dove into the details of why the Archewell Foundation chose to finance their report.

The panel went by the name- Breaking Barriers, Shaping Narratives: How Women Lead On and Off the Screen, where Meghan Markle teamed up with Katie Couric, Brooke Shields, and author-sociologist Nancy Wang Yuen. Meghan Markle’s motivation was to get a deep insight on women’s lives and their experiences. Plus, she wanted to call out the flaws in how women are portrayed on TV. Last but not least, she was there to be a voice for women, especially mothers.

The report highlighted the gaps that needed filling to achieve genuine representation in the Television content. The Duchess talked about how proud she was to chip in with her Archewell Foundation in this report. With the Sussexes striving to make a big positive impact in the world, while also giving credit to others doing the same, it is safe to say that even though they moved away from the royal scene, they have still got that royal essence in them, despite the controversies shadowing the couple.
