October is a significant month in the United Kingdom where all members of the Black community come together to celebrate the impact of black heritage and culture. People from African and Caribbean backgrounds have had an enduring and crucial influence on Britain. However, their contributions often fly under the radar. Meghan Markle, who has been on record to talk about her biracial identity, passionately supports black empowerment. In the year 2021, Markle with her husband Prince Harry celebrated Black History Month.

The Sussexes attended a virtual poetry class via Zoom to celebrate the people of color. Now, after two years, Prince William and Kate Middleton marked their first appearance in the Black History Month celebrations.

The royal family has repeatedly come under the allegations of turning a blind eye to racism. Whether it was the late Queen Elizabeth’s failure to apologize for her support of the slave trade or the Oprah Winfrey interview with the Sussexes, there have been numerous racism-related scandals in the royal family. However, the recent initiative taken by the Prince and Princess of Wales could bring a change to the public’s negative perception.

Recently, the 41-year-old royals paid a visit to the members of the Windrush generation at the Grange Pavilion. The royal couple celebrated Black History Month with the community, along with the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush to London. They learned about the positive contribution of the minority community to the country. They also had conversations with members of all ages and made an effort to understand their concerns.

The Duke and the Duchess of Sussex have always been unafraid of speaking against the evils in society. Be it outright sexism, toxic tabloid culture, or systemic racism, the couple has always been quick to shut down ideas that did not sit right with their moral compass. The 39-year-old once shared his thoughts in response to the racial controversies with his wife. While talking to People magazine in January to promote his memoir, the Duke revealed that even he was not immune to racism in the industry.

The Prince further shared that growing up in a privileged family made him unaware of the prejudices people like his wife faced on a daily basis. After marrying the Suits star, the Prince got a whole new perspective on his life. Addressing the issue, the Duke of Sussex exclaimed “We live in a world with systemic racism, and none of us are immune from the effects of that.”
