3 Reasons Shawn Levy Should Direct ‘Avengers 5’, 3 Reasons It Should Be Russo Brothers
Following Deadpool & Wolverine, the MCU’s next big hook is Avengers 5, once called The Kang Dynasty. Despite the lure of crossovers in the universe, the ultimate success of the upcoming movie still hinges on who takes the helm of it. And two of the most popular choices to direct Avengers 5 are the Russo Brothers, who have single-handedly been behind some of the most successful projects to come out of the franchise, and Shawn Levy, who has, quite literally, pulled the Marvel studio out of its long stretch of flops.
Both contenders, however, bring their unique strengths to the table that could turn Avengers 5 into a box-office sensation.

Shawn Levy has become everyone’s favorite director, especially after he found his partner-in-crime, Ryan Reynolds, and created their magnum opus, Deadpool & Wolverine. The director is also the top choice of Marvel to direct Avengers 5. While the filmmaker, true to form, has kept his lips sealed, if rumors are to be believed, he has also been in conversation with Marvel for the project.
Bringing out the heart in the film
Shawn Levy spent years in family-friendly comedy movies before making his shift to the superhero genre. However, he has not forgotten his roots despite the shift. Levy makes sure to sprinkle the charm of wholesome comedy into his superhero films, much like he did with Deadpool & Wolverine. This ability to inject heart and soul into his projects makes them universally appealing.
Extensive expertise in various genres
Shawn Levy also has a flair for blending multiple genres. His projects are anything but one-dimensional and are mixed with action, comedy, and superheroes in an amazing way. It can be observed in the Netflix crown jewel, Stranger Things, where he served as an executive producer and expertly balanced intense drama with lighter, more playful moments.
Great reputation
Shawn Levy, even more than the fact that he is the first filmmaker to receive a writer-director-producer credit in Marvel cinematic history, is loved for the way he brings that spirit of respectful partnership. Levy has earned a reputation for being loved by everyone he has worked with so far, and is also known for bringing a culture of kindness around him.
Having said that, despite him being rumored as Marvel’s top pick to direct Avengers 5, it appears that Shawn Levy may have turned down the opportunity and is reportedly working on a film in the Star Wars universe.
Why Avengers franchise should stick to Russo Brothers?
Russo Brothers have become synonymous with the MCU. Considering their history with the superhero universe, many fans were upset by the news of them leaving the studio after Avengers: Endgame. However, some recent reports by The Hollywood Reporter have made them hopeful again, as allegedly, the brothers are in talks with Marvel to direct the 5th and 6th installments of Avengers.
Impressive track record with MCU
The Russo Brothers have directed four movies in the franchise so far, including Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: Civil War, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. All four movies have been super hits at the box office, not just domestically, but internationally as well. Given such a track record, it is no surprise why Marvel would trust the brothers with blind faith to helm the next two Avengers installments as well.
Treatment of Superhero characters

The Russo Brothers not only treat their characters with the respect they deserve, but also juggle large ensembles with ease. Even going back to The Winter Soldier, which had the biggest cast of any solo film at the time, they managed to deliver an outstanding movie. They did it again with Civil War in 2016, which had the largest number of characters in any superhero film up to that point. Therefore, the Russos are the perfect fit for directing a story packed with multiple superheroes.
Drawing from existing MCU storyline and the comics
The Russo Brothers are top-notch storytellers. They have injected that much-needed grit without falling into the DCEU’s pitfalls. They know how to draw from the existing MCU and the comics with finesse. For instance, in Captain America: Civil War, despite all the Sokovia Accords, Wanda’s personal struggles, and Black Panther’s quest for revenge, the brothers somehow managed to make the movie a genuine continuation of The Winter Soldier storyline.
