Dating and relationships have been central to the lives of Friends, just like it is for anyone in their 20s. In each episode, Joey slept with someone new, Phoebe kept an eye out for potential dates at Central Perk, and Ross? Well, he was having his fair share of romantic blunders, often involving bizarre talks about adding smells to gas. And then there was the whole Ross and Rachel saga that the makers really pitched as iconic. But, were they truly as iconic as the show wanted us to believe?
Ross and Rachel’s whole will-they-won’t-they thing kept fans glued from the ’90s to the early 2000s. However, there were three other characters who would have made a whole lot more sense with Rachel than Ross ever did.

Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer made Rachel Green and Ross Geller a dynamic pair on the show. But truth be told, they would have not been an ideal couple in real life. A better fit for Rachel was Joey Tribbiani, although their romance was written off as awkward to discredit it. Joey had Rachel’s back through thick and thin, prioritizing her needs as a friend and later as a boyfriend. They also shared a similar personality and mindset, whether it was work, their sense of humor, or their way of living.

Meanwhile, Ross’ personality was a world away from Rachel’s. Another unpopular ship that probably would not have sailed smoothly into reality is Gunther and Rachel. There was something oddly sweet about Gunther’s genuine love for Rachel. He weathered her not-so-great days at Central Perk, gently pointing out her flaws without ever resorting to firing her. Even when she called it quits, he held no grudges. And if it were not for the white hair, they could have been an unexpectedly adorable couple. But, who was Rachel’s perfect match on the show?
Rachel’s perfect match did not only share the same wavelength but was also secure and confident about his feelings, something Ross fell short of.

The best match for Rachel Green is none other than the office-jerk-turned-charmer, Gavin Mitchell. Gavin and Rachel did not exactly kick off on friendly terms, but boy, did they make a stunning pair. They did not only push each other professionally but also clicked on an emotional level. Gavin’s smooth talk and impromptu humor made him the total package for Rachel Green. He even took on babysitting duties for Emma, despite being a bit out of his depth with crying women and babies.

Another feather in Gavin’s cap was his talent for selecting thoughtful gifts and offering wise advice. When Rachel called in sick, he checked in on Rachel the next day, soup in hand. Gavin also maturely buried his feelings when he realized that Rachel was not ready for a relationship. Yet, in the grand scheme of things, Ross and Rachel had to be endgame. Therefore, despite the steamy chemistry and undeniable connection, the short-term office romance came to an end.
