From Oscar chants to golden tickets, if Hollywood has shown a starship winning on every front, it is none other than Zoë Saldaña and Selena Gomez-led 2024 musical. Although the award seasons are yet to pick up the pace, with the year drawing to a close, it will not be long before both actors pop up on every high-profile nomination roster. But following their Golden Globes nods and an almost guaranteed entry to the Academy, Jacques Audiard’s stars are ending the year on a high note, earning their righteous mention in the good books of legendary filmmaker James Cameron.

Speaking just ahead of next year’s award season showdown, Cameron laid bare why he is now a superfan of Saldaña and Gomez’s flick.

During a recent appearance on the Ringer Movies podcast, James Cameron raved about Zoë Saldaña and Selena Gomez’s film, revealing he has watched Emilia Pérez three times already. Dubbing the movie unlike anything made before, Cameron was reportedly blown away. However, what really struck a chord with the Avatar director was its vision, “I think it’s bold, it’s daring.” Cameron gave the pats to Jacques Audiard for the curation and execution.

Besides Audiard’s vision of excellence and its delivery, Cameron showed a massive love for Saldaña, who he thought was absolutely “fantastic.” The director senses a moment of reckoning where her talents will be finally acknowledged at the highest level, securing “the stature” and recognition she has worked tirelessly to achieve. For Cameron, Emilia Pérez is not a movie that can be boxed into a singular thread of appreciation because the “fascinations” are actually more than one.

Saldaña believes actors have an “innate need to connect with other people” because the hard work they put into their works of art comes from the inherent intention to communicate and resonate with the public. Once recognition comes, the art no longer needs to be closeted. Since artistry is all about establishing an “instant connection” with the audience, even if that is brief, the Golden Globes nomination has her hopes up for more.
