“They didn’t have…” – ‘Casino Royale’ Director Finally Reveals Why He Didn’t Cast Henry Cavill as 007 on 70 Years of James Bond
Henry Cavill may have been a perfect James Bond; this is a sigh that has been ringing among fans since time immemorial. Well, at least since Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale, which introduced to the world the adventures and misadventures of one of the finest characters in the history of detective fiction- James Bond. Though his predecessor- C. Auguste Dupin and widely welcomed Sherlock Holmes played an important role in the genre’s development, it is James Bond who has been ruling the cinema world.
Notably, exactly on Casino Royale’s 70th anniversary, we got to know why the fan-favorite British actor couldn’t make it to the 2006 soft reboot. Long-term casting director Debbie McWilliams apparently went deeper into explaining why many potential entrants, including Henry Cavill and Sam Heughan, couldn’t get the role. It happened in his conversation with Radio Times that the director informed us about their approach to casting an actor. It seems like Cavill’s youthful inexperience back then is to blame.
“They didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on, it’s a massive responsibility,” McWilliams told Radio Times. He further clarified that he doesn’t think “they had the gravity.” Though the Enola Holmes actor may not have had gravity in the older times, he has now developed himself as a spy hero and odds are in his favor. However, we have no updates about the latest casting call, and everything is still up for speculation.

Let us look at Cavill’s history as a spy hero.
Henry Cavill and detective fiction- the best on-and-off relationship
Although Cavill was not a constant to the genre, he has contributed a lot and the spy movies have returned the favor by proving his merit. Cavill’s two-decade-long career has been quite an entertaining affair, and his detective and spy personae, although very few, had a tremendous impact on his success. While his Sherlock Holmes avatar had a rejuvenating impact on the audience; his spy avatar in Ian Fleming’s Man From U.N.C.L.E had our jaws dropped.

How can we forget Sand Castle and Night Hunter? These are the two movies that not only boast Cavill’s intelligence that is needed in a detective, but also portray his greatness as a performer. And well, his double-faced agent in Mission Impossible: Fallout? While the biceps reload could be his best move, his overall performance was just brilliant. With these merits already in his hand, fans also have The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Argylle coming up to test his talent.
