The $6,900,000 Cinematic Disaster That Arnold Schwarzenegger Almost Could Not Survive
Having movies like The Terminator and Commando, Arnold Schwarzenegger certainly is a household name. However, even the cult classics have their fair share of debacles, and the 75-year-old Austrian actor is no exception. Although his recent Netflix projects such as FUBAR and his life documentary may have been a streaming hit, Schwarzenegger also had a Cinematic disaster under his name.
Well, if you have followed his trajectory closely, you might know what we are talking about. Yes, his 1985 movie Red Sonja. Not only was it a box office disaster, but it apparently sent Schwarzenegger’s career down the rabbit hole, almost. Red Sonja, loosely based on the popular comic book character created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith, aimed to capitalize on the success of Schwarzenegger’s previous collaborations with director Richard Fleischer, Conan the Barbarian, and Conan the Destroyer. The film follows the eponymous Red Sonja, a skilled swordswoman seeking vengeance against an evil queen, played by Sandahl Bergman. Schwarzenegger portrayed Lord Kalidor, a powerful warrior who joins forces with Red Sonja in her quest.
Upon its release in 1985, Red Sonja received scathing reviews from critics and struggled to attract audiences. Critics criticized the film for its weak screenplay, poorly executed action sequences, and lack of chemistry between the lead actors. Furthermore, the decision to deviate from the source material disappointed fans of the comic book series. Ultimately, Red Sonja failed to resonate with both critics and viewers, resulting in a disappointing box office performance.
