In an interview with Games Radar, The Royal Hotel director Kitty Green highlighted the key horror rules that the Julia Garner starrer will break. She also mentioned that she plans to break the film’s clichés by ending it differently than the original. Challenging the norm even more, Green stated that the documentary had a “bleak ending” and that she wanted the rest of the world to hear her point of view, something she believes “the girls” will root for.
Kitty Green entered the directorial world with her 2019 nonfiction movie The Assistant. The Royal Hotel’s plot is based on true events. Hanna (Julia Garner) and Liv (Jessica Henwick) are the two main characters in the film. These two are great friends who are going backpacking in Australia. However, when they run out of money, they decide to take a live-in job behind the bar at a tavern called The Royal Hotel. The bar owner offers the girls a boisterous introduction to Down Under Drinking. However, when their jokes cross the line, the best pals find themselves in a very dangerous situation.
Kitty Green also noted in the same interview with Games Radar that instead of focusing on whether the ladies would survive the events or not, as in a traditional horror film, she will aim to delve into whether they should be facing these scenarios at all. She further said that the two leads have quite different temperaments when it comes to dealing with a crisis, with Liv being more accepting of people’s broken states and Hanna being more careful.
