The search for Hollywood’s next James Bond may be gathering pace, but not everyone believes the perfect 007 can simply be found in an audition room. As speculation continues to swirl around who will inherit Daniel Craig’s iconic tuxedo, the woman who helped cast the franchise for four decades thinks that the next James Bond needs one thing. And according to her, the next 007 needs something no audition can ever teach.

So, what is the one quality former Bond casting chief Debbie McWilliams believes every future 007 must possess?

Speaking to The Independent, Debbie McWilliams, who spent nearly 40 years casting Bond films from For Your Eyes Only to No Time to Die, insisted the next 007 should be “somebody who is completely out of the blue.” Rather than choosing an actor already surrounded by celebrity headlines, she argued that James Bond must remain “a total enigma,” calling it “absolutely essential” that people know as little as possible about the man behind the tuxedo. For McWilliams, that mystery is what has always made the world’s most iconic spy so compelling.

“somebody who is completely out of the blue.” absolutely essential, Bond remains “a total enigma.” McWilliams told The Independent.

Elaborating on her philosophy, McWilliams said Bond should never be seen worrying about where he shops, who his parents are, or what his life looks like away from the mission because spies are meant to remain unknowable. She also stressed that viewers must believe he is truly capable of carrying out his “licensed to kill” duties, warning that the moment that illusion disappears, the franchise loses its grip on the audience. It is a principle she protected throughout her four decades with James Bond and one she believes should continue shaping the franchise’s future.

However, becoming James Bond has never been about replacing one actor. It is about joining one of Hollywood’s most exclusive legacies.

Who could become the next James Bond?

With Bond 26 now entering its active casting phase, director Denis Villeneuve is preparing to usher 007 into a new era alongside producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman under Amazon MGM Studios. While cameras aren’t expected to roll until early 2027, the race to inherit James Bond’s iconic tuxedo is already heating up, with Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson emerging as the leading names among bookmakers and prediction markets. For now, however, the franchise’s next biggest secret remains firmly under wraps.

For more than six decades, only a handful of actors have officially carried the famous 007 title on the big screen. The legacy began with Sean Connery in Dr. No (1962) before passing to George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and most recently, Daniel Craig, whose tenure concluded with No Time to Die in 2021. Outside the main Eon Productions timeline, David Niven also portrayed Bond in Casino Royale (1967), while Barry Nelson and Bob Holness became the character’s earliest television and radio adaptations.

As James Bond prepares to step into a new era under Denis Villeneuve, Debbie McWilliams believes the loudest audition, but the quiet mystery that no camera can capture, won’t choose the next 007.
