The History of the Met Gala: A Journey Through Fashion’s Biggest Night

Published 03/05/2025, 12:08 AM PST

As it has been thoroughly established, the Met Gala stands for one of the most prestigious popular-culture events in this day and age. It remains a pinnacle of fashion showcasing and does not hold any fashion event accountable to their size for which it suffices. Starting in 1948, the Met Gala is today, going to be held on the 5th of May 2023, putting forward a stage that will showcase both a designer's passion and a model's prowess. Confirmed to be the first menswear-focused show in about two decades, titled: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

As the anticipation for the night keeps building up, with at stakes being the burgeoning fashion trends that will be tested to their limits this particular evening, it is only right for one to uncover the history that went into the making of the epic spectacle of the modern world. Because the last time this happened, it was concluded that the Ajanta and Ellora caves were carved out by extra terrestrials.

The very first Met Gala took place in 1948. What one might not know is how it was a midnight dinner at the Waldorf Astoria (a renowned hotel and resort chain across the country), with tickets priced at $50. It was organized by then-fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert, who had made it her goal to support the newly founded Costume Institute at the time, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While initially the event was a modest get-together with support for the fundraiser as the only motive, the years saw it grow into a global extravaganza under the influence of figures like Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour.

The Met Gala, the Early Years: 1948–1971

The event had, from the beginning, however humble it may have been, targeted the makeshift superiority. From 1948 to about 71, the Met Gala was held as a modest event with a civil dinner and a $50 ticket price. The first ever Met Gala was similar. A modest dinner on the premises of Waldorf Astoria, the event had remained relatively low key, with invites to Manhattan's high society and fashion elite. The main goal of the Met Gala was to raise funds for the then newly established Costume Institute that had opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Met Gala, the Vreeland Years: 1972–1987

It is Diana Vreeland who is accredited for the transformation of the Met Gala from a somber get together into a wild and elevated showcase of fashion unabashed. Introducing themes and turning them into a top priority for the years to come. As a former Vogue editor, she had brought in the very first theme of The World of Balenciaga in 1973. Her tenure drew celebrities like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor, elevating the event's global appeal. Vreeland's flair for fantasy and glamor set the stage for the Met Gala's evolution as the world's most iconic fashion event.

Vreeland's extravaganza: The Glory of Russian Costume

One of the stage setting incidence of Met Gala had been the theme: The Glory of Russian Costume. Set to showcase traditional Russian garments and accessories, photographs spanning centuries in just one evening. Everything was orchestrated to highlight the rich cultural heritage and intricate artistry of Russian fashion. Vreeland's ability to transform historical and cultural narratives into compelling visual spectacle was elevated in this Met Gala.

The Met Gala, the Pat Buckley Years: 1988–1995

From 1988 to 1995, socialite Pat Buckley chaired the Met Gala, elevating its prestige as a premier cultural event. Collaborating with Richard Martin and Harold Koda, Buckley emphasized exclusivity while expanding accessibility through on-site after-party tickets. Her tenure attracted top designers like Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs, alongside high-profile guests. Under her, the Met Gala formed the much-needed bridge between fashion, art, and society, cementing its reputation as a must-attend fundraiser. Buckley’s efforts laid the groundwork for Anna Wintour’s transformative era beginning in 1995.

The Met Gala, the Anna Wintour Years: 1995–Present

Anna Wintour, current holder of the tenure and having been doing so since 1995, was the very Wintour who transformed the Met Gala into a global phenomenon. It was under her that the event shifted to the first Monday of May and came to be known as the "Oscars of the East Coast". Wintour maintains an unmatched level of meticulousness in her work, be it the placement of celebrities at the dinner or enforcing the rules (it is strictly prohibited to take pictures inside the venue). The heaviness of regulation in the work has managed to raise over $175 million for the Costume Institute.

The Met Gala's evolution from a modest fundraiser to a global fashion exhibition is one of the most absurd yet beautiful turnouts of an event that is anticipated to host music's biggest mights this year. With the complete feeling similar to watching the aristocracy eat cake while simultaneously experiencing the voyeuristic joy of observing the spectacle from an eagle's view, the lavishness of the event never dies down.
