Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, achieved a milestone when she became the inaugural guest editor for the highly esteemed September edition of British Vogue. However defying expectations, the Duchess decided not to feature on the cover but instead chose to highlight the achievements of fifteen remarkable women who she firmly believed were making a significant difference as “Forces for Change,” in the global community.

The magazine cover showcased an assembly of women from various professions and upbringings. It included actresses, advocates, athletes, writers, politicians, and models. Among the names featured are Gemma Chan, Laverne Cox, Jacinda Ardern, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Yara Shahidi, and Jameela Jamil. Markle expressed her intention to bring attention to these women in the Vogue issue, who were actively breaking barriers and shaping the global agenda in her heartfelt letter as an editor.

The cover also featured a blank square, which the Duchess clarified symbolizes a mirror. She mentioned her intention to involve the reader as a catalyst for change and motivate them to utilize their platforms to make a difference. Taking the job seriously, she even sat down with Michelle Obama to get some editorial tips while also taking in some advice on motherhood as well. 

The September edition of British Vogue goes beyond displaying Meghan’s editorial abilities. It also provides a sneak peek into her personal interests and passions. In this issue, she curated articles covering a range of subjects, including mental well-being, women’s empowerment, fashion, beauty, and overall wellness.

Though Markle did her best as he always does, her edition of the magazine received mixed reactions. Media and critics praised the Duchess for being progressive, while others had some serious issues with it.

The British Vogue’s September Edition by Meghan Markle was subject to mixed reviews

The September edition of British Vogue garnered praise and admiration from both fans and celebrities. Many people commended Meghan Markle for utilizing her platform to amplify the voices of women to convey a positive and empowering message. However, some critics have accused Meghan of drawing inspiration for the cover from a book called The Game Changers, which she wrote an essay for in 2016. This particular book also showcased fifteen women in black and white portraits on its cover. 

Some individuals also raised questions regarding the Duchess’ decision not to include Queen Elizabeth II or any other members of the family on the cover. They argued that this omission missed an opportunity to celebrate the women who have provided support for Meghan during her role as a member of royalty. Though the Duchess herself did not feature on the cover, many Royals have previously graced the cover with Kate Middleton, Lady Di, Princess Eugenie, and even Prince Harry.
