Since the early 20s, the cinematic landscape has undergone an evolution in terms of what sells at the box office. And before Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell came out with Anyone but You, a rom-com almost never made the cut. As per Powell's interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the co-stars had taken some very risky steps. One of them was rejecting "guaranteed (paydays)" and bigger budgets only so that they could "take the gamble" to bring rom-coms back.
It seems like crackling chemistry is not all that the co-stars shared, but also a worldview about Hollywood. Both Powell and Sweeney, much like most of the fans of the rom-com genre, had analyzed how in order for their romantic comedy to not be another fleeting title, it had to make it to the box office and it had to make it big. And looking at how it rose to the top, it sure did what Powell and Sydney hoped for it to do.
The Anyone but You co-stars, in their pursuit of making their movie a success, have effectively etched their names in the history of pop culture as the duo that brought rom-coms back owing to the slew of movies that followed.

It is only nature to imitate, if not fully, then in bits, something that has proven to be a hit. While this was not completely the case with Anyone but You and the surprising amount of romantic movies that followed after, the Glen Powell starrer did become the torch bearer with its big numbers at the box office. Although unrelated, following the movie's release, the romantic comedy genre saw the return of its princess, Anne Hathaway, with The Idea of You.
The Idea of You, unlike the Sydney Sweeney starrer, did not take the gamble and went straight onto streaming on Prime Videos, but it managed to garner an abundance of love from the audiences. Now with Blake Lively, Dakota Johnson, and Scarlett Johansson, all lined up with their romantic movies, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell will have no doubts regarding the cultural impact that their movie had.
