Sydney Sweeney Shifts Gears, Pulls Out the Producer’s Chair for a Live-Action ‘OutRun’ Movie

Hollywood is currently at the top of its game, and A-listers are suited to take on the field anytime. Since the dawn of showbiz, Tinseltown has evolved in more ways than one, which means the celebrities had no choice but to follow suit. Although artists, by default, are blessed with a chameleon-like persona, one of the hottest tickets in Hollywood, Sydney Sweeney, was recently found changing gears again, this time, for a live-action OutRun movie.

Amidst the roof-hitting anticipation for Euphoria and more, Sweeney is reportedly pulling up her sleeves to produce the gig, and here is everything you need to know.

According to a recent Deadline report, citing industry insiders, a live-action feature adaptation of Sega’s famous arcade video game OutRun is in the works at Universal Studios. Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney have joined forces, with the former attached to direction and the latter onboard to produce the upcoming flick. Jayson Rothwell will write the script. Bay will also produce the OutRun movie with partner Brad Fuller under their Platinum Dunes banner.

Platinum Dunes has a first-look deal with Universal Studios. The polyglot star has been assigned the project only to produce as of now. However, this is not the first flick Sweeney is producing, having already sat in the producer’s chair for Immaculate and the Christy Martin biopic. Besides her, Toru Nakahara will also produce for Sega, and Shuji Utsumi, President/COO of Sega Corp., will supervise the project on Sega’s behalf.

Hollywood is having its time with video game adaptations, and Universal Studios is no newcomer on the turf. OutRun is poised to follow The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Five Nights at Freddy’s, which grossed $1.4 billion and $290 million, respectively. However, those hoping for more details on the content of Sydney Sweeney’s OutRun movie might be disappointed because the plot details are currently foggy.

Sega’s OutRun series burst forth from the neon-lit arcades of the 1980s, revolutionizing the driving game genre with its heart-pumping speed and infectious electronic soundtracks, which then spawned a distinct music subgenre, and later came to be known as OutRun. This potent combination catapulted OutRun to global fame, cementing its status as one of Sega’s most iconic and enduring franchises. Although details are scarce on the movie, once the momentum picks up, fans hopefully will have more information about OutRun.
