When Sydney Sweeney came on board for The White Lotus, the fusion of dark comedy and social satire birthed one of the most gripping American dramas of the year. With its all-star cast and two highly acclaimed seasons, the series really showed off what Sweeney could do as an actress. One intriguing aspect of the show was its use of novels as subtle nods to the character's inner worlds. However, it gets even more fascinating upon lifting the curtain on what went down behind the scenes. 

Sydney Sweeney once spilled some interesting tidbits about the books and her character in The White Lotus that had been kept under wraps from fans. 

In the first season of the HBO and Sky Atlantic series revolving around wealthy individuals mingling at the breakfast buffet, eagle-eyed fans soon noticed how books became windows into the characters' inner worlds. Among them, Sydney Sweeney's character, Olivia, was one of the most avid readers and was frequently seen by the poolside engrossed in works like Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams. However, during an interview at the ATX TV Festival in Austin in 2022, the Euphoria sensation revealed that it was all an act and her character “was not actually reading any of these books”.  

Sweeney was excited to read the books during filming as well, but they turned out to be empty. "They were blank!" she found out. Though she could not enjoy the reads, Sweeney had to "fight" for her role in the Mike White-directed show. Interestingly, it was her breakout performance in Euphoria that made it even more tough for her to land a role in The White Lotus.

The makers of The White Lotus did not believe Sweeney could pull off her Olivia. Nonetheless, despite giving it her all to secure the role in this series, Sweeney once revealed her clear choice between Cassie and Olivia. 

Cassie and Olivia are Sydney Sweeney's most complex and beloved characters. But if she had to pick, she would go for Cassie from Euphoria over Olivia from The White Lotus. The 26-year-old revealed this in a game of This or That for Variety Cover Stars presented by Ford. According to the actress, she prefers her Euphoria role because it is more “challenging, crazy, deep".

While she enjoys Olivia's fun and snarky personality, it is Cassie who really pushes Sydney Sweeney as an actress because of her complex character. Despite new characters joining The White Lotus, there is no word yet on whether Sweeney will return for a third season in either Euphoria or The White Lotus.
