From her humble roots in a small town, Sydney Sweeney will now helm one of the biggest comic book characters out there. The actress is about to swing her way into the male-dominated Spiderverse. In a remarkable win for comic book movie fans, Variety reports that Sony has officially confirmed Sydney Sweeney to star as Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman, in the upcoming film Madame Web, based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Directed by S. J. Clarkson, the movie will also feature Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, the original Madame Web as part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Moreover, the star’s dedication and enthusiasm make her an ideal fit. The stunning celeb icon has been diligently training and physically mastering gymnastics and stunts as well as immersing herself in the comic books and lore of the character’s universe. Sweeney also considers herself a fan of Spider-Woman and shall strive to do justice to both the character and her fans.
Notably, she now stands toe-to-toe or web-to-web against Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. All of whom have previously helmed live-action versions of Spider-Man and now Sweeney will be the first as Spider-Woman.
Madame Web marks a makeshift change for Sony as it calls for female power at the helm. After thumping successes in two animated Spiderverse movies, the studio is looking to revamp its own live-action Spiderverse sans Spider-Man.
