Sydney Sweeney News: Major Filming Updates for Christy Martin Biopic Revealed, With New Cast Members

After a blockbuster rom-com and a gripping psychological horror, Sydney Sweeney is once again changing directions with a hard-hitting boxing biopic. The actress will bring the story of boxing trailblazer Christy Martin, aka the female Rocky, to life on screen. This will also be a return to Sweeney’s fighting roots, which she had to step away from for her acting career. But now, the untitled boxing biopic is in full swing, and some major updates have come out recently.

Not only has there been a big update in production, but multiple new names have also been added to the upcoming project.

Black Bear, the Teddy Schwarzman studio handling international rights for the biopic, revealed a lineup of new cast additions to David Michôd’s untitled Sydney Sweeney-led biopic (via Deadline). Ben Foster, Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Ethan Embry, Jess Gabor, and Chad L. Coleman are now part of the project. And that is not all. The studio also announced that the production began this Monday in North Carolina.

The filming location was first hinted at back in August when Tona B. Dahlquist Casting’s Facebook page revealed the project would be filmed in Charlotte from late September through mid-November. Sweeney, in addition to taking on the lead role, will also produce the project under her Fifty-Fifty Films banner. And it seems she is more than ready to get back into the ring after being away for eight years.

In May, Sydney Sweeney revealed to Deadline that she had practiced kickboxing for seven years, up until she was 19. "I've been itching to get back into the ring, train and transform my body,” said the 27-year-old. She went on to express that she finds Christy Martin’s story both “powerful and emotional.” Martin’s battle against gender stereotypes and her struggle through emotional, physical, and financial abuse was what pulled Sweeney into taking on this role.

Sweeney admitted that the role will be a test, both physically and emotionally, but she is more than up for the challenge, saying, “I love challenging myself.” While Sweeney may have left her boxing gloves behind her years ago, this biopic will offer a fresh look at the Euphoria star and could very well become one of the biggest milestones of her career- perhaps even putting her in the running for her first Oscar.
