In the wild world of the supernatural, superheroes sure know how to throw in a plot twist or two. But in the realm of cinema, those twists can be even juicier than the heroes themselves! Every year, fans get their superhero fix on the big screen, and 2024 was no exception. Of course, not every movie hit a home run like Madame Web, starring Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson, which left fans disappointed despite all the hype. But in a twist worthy of a superhero saga, Madame Web has surprisingly found some love among fans, all thanks to an antiheroic misstep—Joker: Folie à Deux.

The highly anticipated sequel has tossed the spotlight onto Madame Web, swinging way below in the web of flops.

It has barely been a week since Joker: Folie à Deux hit the screens, and the reviews are already rolling in but things are not looking peachy. Despite all the hype and eager anticipation, the movie snagged a dismal D on CinemaScore. Meanwhile, Madame Web starring Sydney Sweeney may not have wowed at the box office either, but the twist is it pulled a C+ while Joker: Folie à Deux stumbled with a D score, the lowest for any comic book movie.

CinemaScore gauges audience reactions to the latest blockbusters by collecting grades from moviegoers across the US and Canada. They take a statistically balanced sample from those opening night crowds to dish out scores ranging from A+ to F. When the audience leaves the theater; they get a ballot with six questions to fill out by bending back some tabs. However, it is not rocket science to see that a C for Madame Web looks a whole lot better than a D for the R-rated sequel.

Fans call Sydney Sweeney’s Madame Web back on the love track because of Joker 2

Madame Web, starring Sydney Sweeney, might have missed the mark at the box office, but once it hit Netflix, it zoomed straight into the Top 10 Movies list in just a day. With its streaming debut, the film was already basking in some long-lost love, but after Joker: Folie à Deux’s release, the affection for Madame Web has shot up like a superhero on a mission.

Many fans are convinced it was the “cringy stuff” that landed Joker: Folie à Deux in a league way below Madame Web, while others argue that the hype around the two films was totally different, making the disappointment with Joker hit harder.

While this brings fans the opportunity to decide for themselves, who knows, if they give Joker: Folie à Deux a chance too, that joke could end up being a real punchline.
