As one of the most coveted actresses in the entertainment industry, Sydney Sweeney has firmly established herself as the quintessential ‘It’ girl. Whether through her contribution to the tabloid fodder, red carpet pinch-me moments, a stacked-up credits list, or her impact on the beauty and lifestyle tandem, she embodies the essence of being the ultimate trendsetter. However, despite being at the top of every director's wishlist and juggling a busy schedule, the reigning 'It' girl may soon face competition, as Queer's Omar Apollo has nominated a prominent one.

While Sydney Sweeney has demonstrated the strength of a rising star over the past few years, seeing her potentially lose the reputation she has built was something other than what fans anticipated for 2024.

Sydney Sweeney is a major pop cultural reference for Gen Z, recently making a splash in the Floating City with Jonathan Davino. However, as she dazzled in the spotlight, she was seemingly losing her grip on her status as the ‘It’ girl, unaware of the shift. Meanwhile, Omar Apollo from Queer recently spoke with Drew Starkey for Interview Magazine about how Starkey transitioned from a wild character in Outer Banks to a standout role in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, highlighting how they have found the “It girl for real.”

Discussing the intimate scenes Starkey performed in the movie, Apollo inquired about his feelings while watching them. Starkey replied that he had seen most of them during the ADR process and found the experience “fun.” As Apollo agreed, they reminisced about times when Starkey felt like an outsider. Reflecting on how the film could transform his life, Apollo concluded Starkey had indeed become the new ‘It’ girl—someone who once dreamed of such a milestone but thought it was out of reach.

Apollo also noted that Starkey initially made an impression of a genuine country boy.

In their Interview Magazine conversation, Omar Apollo reminisced about a drunken chat with Drew Starkey, where they both felt somewhat out of place in the world of glitz and glamour. Starkey reflected on his current age, noting that if he had moved to the City of Angels at 18, he likely would have "crashed and burned" because of his deep-rooted country boy identity.

Apollo nodded in agreement, recalling that he recognized Starkey's country roots as soon as he arrived in Tacoma, telling himself, “yeah, this dude is different.” Starkey laughed off the comment, noting that you “can’t take the country out of the boy.” Apollo remarked that this very characteristic gives Starkey an authenticity to stand out. While many actors feel like outsiders when trying to make it in Tinseltown, Starkey's ability to carve out a place for himself makes him the new ‘It’ person, even if Sydney Sweeney holds the ‘It’ girl title for a little longer.
