Stripped of Superman Cape, What if Henry Cavill Played Villain in James Gunn’s DC?
It is late 2023, and it is no secret that Henry Cavill has officially let go of his Superman role, which he helmed a decade ago. Moreover, James Gunn also made it more on fans’ noses with his casting of David Corenswet as the new Superman of his rebooted universe. Regardless, the British actor has held his optimistic self upright. While Cavill’s moral compass may be in the right direction, Superman’s has not always been the same.
The character which stands for hope and justice has in some iterations of the comics taken a turn to the dark side. Now, a fan art asks what if Cavill were to do the same?

Remember the DC Trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman that Zack Snyder brought along with his DCEU vision? Yes, the iconic three starring Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot, respectively. All three actors have been out from the reboot after the release of The Flash in June this year. However, that movie also opened the DC multiverse. Thus, fan art imagined a possible look of them returning as the evil versions of their characters.
It showcased Henry Cavill, taking the role of Ultraman with Affleck and Gadot being Owlman and Superwoman, respectively. Notably in the comics, such a possibility has already taken place. Ultraman was the polar opposite of Superman, with an equally opposite morality. Moreover, while the beloved hero got weakened by Superman, his alternate universe version got stronger by it. Owlman and Superwoman had similar powers to their ‘good’ versions, except for a botched sense of judgment. While it would certainly make up for an interesting to watch, it remains a far-fetched scenario for now.
As of the current slate, Gunn’s DC Universe is at its nascency with even the first movie yet to take flight. Thus, the answer to the current status of live-action DC would evoke – it is complicated.

James Gunn announced the reboot of the entire DC Universe to gallantly roll out his vision for the same. However, with it, he messed up the fates of the then yet-to-be-released DCEU remnants, such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash. Both of the movies failed disastrously at the box office with Shazam actor Zachary Levi, shifting the blame on Black Adam star, Dwayne Johnson.
Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is still to be released this December. The movie shall finally close the lid to the old DC and transition to the new slate. However, the fate of most of the existing actors barring Gadot, Cavill, and Affleck remains unknown. Moreover, there is also confusion as to where the August-launched Blue Beetle shall fit in. Regardless, James Gunn is expected to make it all clear with the release of his Superman: Legacy.
