“Stop…” – Matthew Perry Once Reflected on the Timelessness of ‘Friends’ and a Reunion
In 1994, Matthew Perry debuted himself as Chandler Bring and as the youngest member of the Friends cast. Helming the role of the sarcastic wise-cracker gem, the actor etched himself as well as his character into mainstream pop culture. Decades after the show’s eventful ending, it still finds relevance and references, even to the extent of remaining one of the most bankable productions. While every one of the six core members played their part to perfection, the late actor’s portrayal begs even more attention and respect now that his struggles with life lay bare following his unfortunate passing.
Incidentally, at one point in time, the actor reflected on the show’s worthiness while refusing to entertain any questions on a probable reunion.

In May 2021, HBO aired Friends: The Reunion, bringing back the timeless gang of six under one roof. Amid massive fanfare and sky-rocketing hype, the episode laid bare some of the most riveting behind-the-scenes and historical moments. However, long before it, in February 2016, Matthew Perry had grown tired of repeated questions at a probable reunion and once asked an interviewer to “Stop asking me questions about the Friends reunion”. Speaking on the occasion of the release of his debut in playwriting, the actor also commented on the show’s timelessness.
Matthew Perry mentioned to the interviewer that he believed to had moved on from Friends “until everybody asked me questions about it.” Moreover, he also mentioned that they “didn’t do time sensitive jokes” and yet the show still went on strong and still is. The show’s theme of romance and friendship and stories such as Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer playing out their unrequited love still tug the hearts. Despite certain changes to culture with time, it still finds prominence and relevance.
Soon after his passing, new revelations and wills came to the fore. Interestingly, one highlighted that Matthew Perry did not wish to be remembered for Friends primarily.

Not long before he passed away on October 28, Matthew Perry had plans for The Matthew Perry Foundation. An organization aimed primarily at the task of helping people overcome anxiety, depression, and addiction problems and live a happier and fuller life. The actor slipped to opioid addiction following a jet-ski accident in 1997. Unable to recover from it, he suffered near-death moments, including a burst colon and a weeks-long coma.
Perry’s ultimate wish was to help others not fall down this rabbit hole. Unfortunately, before he could see the launch of his organization, he departed for the heavens. Yet, days later, the organization went live and donations started pouring in. As of now, the foundation has taken to full-time work dedicated to the cause and completing what Matthew Perry once wished for.
