Sony’s Spider-Man Universe in Talks for the Return of Former Web-Slingers, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Claims Insider

Sony bought the rights from Marvel in 1999 to give birth to the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire followed by a web-slinger carnage via Andrew Garfield with two parts of Amazing Spider-Man. But after its merger with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most of the evil-doing has been vanquished by Tom Holland. However, it seems like Sony’s Cinematic Universe is unclasping its fist to reinstate the former poster boys to their older glory as per a recent claim by an insider.

This return would mark Maguire and Garfield's first-ever step since the creation of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.

Tom Holland's tenure as the web-slinger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been lengthy, with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield bidding farewell long ago before the integration. However, according to Daniel Richtman's post on Patreon, Maguire and Garfield are reportedly in discussions to reprise their roles as Spider-Man for Sony's Cinematic Universe. This marks their potential return to the Spider-Man franchise for the first time since Sony's Spider-Man Universe was established.

The report suggests that Maguire and Garfield will play central roles in their own multiverse’s storyline, separate from the MCU's narrative. While initially appearing as a move of redemption for Sony's Spider-Man Universe after the lukewarm reception of Madame Web, the separation from the MCU raises questions about whether the upcoming movie will fall under the SSU's banner.

Given that the SSU was designed to connect with the MCU through the multiverse, it prompts speculation about whether this comeback will harken back to Maguire and Garfield's original Spider-Man days or mark a new chapter within the SSU as fans look divided upon the prospect.

Fans are in mixed reaction following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s potential return as Spider-Man

Sony has traditionally been the storyteller behind the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. However, the potential return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Sony's Cinematic Universe seemed unlikely after Tom Holland took on the role. While all three actors delighted fans with their iconic roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home, few expected Maguire and Garfield to make a proper return after they departed the franchise.

Numerous fans felt that such a move should have been considered much earlier, while others pointed out the dearth of fresh storylines for the studio to explore. The rest were opposed to their return to the SSU despite no confirmation of where their storylines could fit into.

As is often the case with revisiting comic book narratives, this possibility sparked a clash of contrasting opinions. While the inclusion of a multiversal storyline brought a glimmer of hope for a meaningful return, the decision to separate from the MCU's narrative left lingering uncertainties. However, the studio's eventual clarification on the matter is expected to provide the definitive answers to these lingering questions.
