Sony’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Pulls off the Unthinkable as It Tops Streaming Charts, Despite a Generational Bombing in Theatres

Since the shutdown of cinema theaters during the pandemic, the generators of Hollywood got some never-before off time, and so did the audiences, as they sat at home and reflected on the choices that they had made until now. Therefore, among the first things to change post-lockdown was the dispersal of the 'anything goes' nature. And this was especially evident in 2024 as comically backed yet plot-devoid movies like Kraven the Hunter hit screens.

With another adaptation of Joker, starring the Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix, also bombing at the box office, one can only pity Kraven the Hunter, especially as it managed to mark a milestone that the former can only dream of for now.

Akin to the dispersal of the 'anything goes' nature, audiences have adopted another contradictory recurrent trait on streaming platforms where 'everything goes'. From forgotten horror movie debuts of top-shots like Ryan Reynolds and several poorly adapted comic book movies, all find a cozy spot on streaming charts. However, what the Sony movie has done is far from cozy. Kraven the Hunter reached #1 on Apple TV+ after recently gracing VOD, a feat yet to be achieved by the cinematic and blockbuster marvel, Wicked, released on VOD around the same time.

Kraven the Hunter earned $59 million at the box office despite their extravagant budget of $110 million, a turnout that can only be described as catastrophic. While the Apple TV+ milestone may have provided some soothing balm for the movie's wounds, it cannot compensate for the organ loss.

The kind welcome of Kraven the Hunter is also a testament to another recurring trend in modern cinema: the reappraisal of Sony comic adaptations by streamers.

The wholesome bond between Sony cinematic adaptations and streamers

While the SAG-AFTRA strikes would indicate that coddling a studio would be the last thing a streamer is interested in, the sheer success that Sony comic adaptations experience post-their box office debacle speaks otherwise. After all, Kraven the Hunter would not be the only comic adaptation released by Sony in 2024 to make it big on streaming; Madame Web has also walked this road.

Both the Sony movies have some eerily similar traits, with both of them being comic adaptations, dependency on popular casting to do the heavy lifting, inconsistent plot, and abysmal run at the box office. However, both found top spots on streaming platforms, all thanks to the Internet's obsession with movies that fall under the 'so bad that they are good' category.
