A decade ago, Henry Cavill got to flaunt his abs of steel in his Superman flick aptly titled Man of Steel. His portrayal of Superman was a delight to watch for fans who couldn’t get enough of his piercing gaze and sharper-than-a-knife jawline. While managing to make even the most invincible superhero seem vulnerable and oddly relatable, Cavill brought his down-to-earth persona on-screen. As the storyline progressed, his on-screen chemistry with Amy Adams who played Lois Lane gave the story a deeper emotional strength, leaving fans wishing for more. Alas, their wishes fell on deaf ears of the DCU makers.

Although the 40-year-old played Superman with all his dedication, Man of Steel never got a sequel. Instead, he was cast in the same role for another flick that failed to hit the mark.

Three years after Man of Steel, Cavill was cast alongside Ben Affleck in what was to be a monumental hit of a movie. But Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice disappointed fans like few DC films had done before. The fact that the flick only received 1.5 stars on Rotten Tomatoes just goes to show how low it was received. Makes fans wonder how Zack Snyder could make such a miserable blunder of choosing this project over reviving Man of Steel.

A sequel to Man of Steel could have helped establish more growth in this version of Superman. Given that the first movie was an origin story and what could have backed it up and added to the character was a sequel that showed Superman come to terms with a world that knows he exists. Instead, we get a rushed setup for Justice League that shows how others perceive Superman and the ultimate Batman v Superman faceoff.

Cavill’s role in Man of Steel may have laid the foundation for subsequent DC films to come in the future. But he was recently robbed of the chance to act in Superman: Legacy too. While James Gunn may have rejected the actor, The Witcher actor has his eyes set on a completely different project.

Back in 2006, Cavill gave the role of James Bond a shot but received a rejection from Martin Campbell. Now back in the game, he is facing fierce competition from Aaron Taylor Johnson. Although he is still leading fans’ opinions charts, Johnson is not the only one the Black Adam actor must beat. Recently added to this list of viable actors is Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy.

Meanwhile, Rege-Jean Page of Bridgerton fame is still eyeing the line-up as well. It seems like Daniel Craig leaving the franchise has opened up Pandora’s box of competition for the 007 part.
