The memories of the historic 2024 Oscars have barely faded, and the anticipation for the next ceremony has begun to ripple through fans. The 97th Oscars promise to be a spectacle to remember. It will once again return to the prestigious Dolby Theatre in Hollywood to honor the brightest stars of the cinematic universe. While movie buffs have started counting down the days to the ceremony, one of the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Carol Baum, has entered controversy for her strong opinions against Euphoria sensation Sydney Sweeney.

In a statement shared with Variety, Sydney Sweeney's representative fired back at Carol Baum's criticisms. They expressed disappointment in seeing a woman in such a prominent position resort to attacking another woman rather than sharing her knowledge and experience for the good. Additionally, they called into question Baum's credibility, suggesting that if this is what she has been teaching her students after decades in the industry, it is a “shameful” reflection of her character.

The response comes after Baum recently sat for an interview after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers at the Jacob Burns Center in Pleasantville, New York. In the interview, she recounted her experiences teaching at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, where she asked a question to her students about Sydney Sweeney's hype, questioning why she is perceived as "so hot" despite supposedly not being "pretty" and lacking acting prowess. Nonetheless, The White Lotus actress has been here before. This is not the first time she has dealt with scrutiny over her acting skills and her looks.

Sydney Sweeney has two Emmy nominations under her belt and roles in several critically acclaimed TV shows. And now she has also transitioned into the role of producer on several of her own projects, including the very recent Immaculate. Yet, despite her success, the actress is still not taken seriously by many people who question her acting abilities and appearance. Speaking to Variety, Sweeney tackled the recurring "Can she act?" questions head-on, saying, "Go watch Reality, The White Lotus, Euphoria, Sharp Objects, and The Handmaid’s Tale."

Sweeney, however, made it clear that she will continue proving herself, with the hope that one day, she will be cast in the film under a visionary director who will give her the recognition she rightfully deserves. She has also been candid about the impact of hurtful comments regarding her looks, opening up during an Instagram Live session to reveal her vulnerabilities. Now, by confronting Carol Baum through her representative, she has made her stance even clearer.
