17 Months Before David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad’ Tease, Will Smith Said This for the Ayer Cut
Zack Snyder once revealed that he had his own director’s cut for almost every movie he has made. Therefore, apart from the theatrical release version of the movie, fans got to see the director’s vision as well. Just like the Justice League director, the Suicide Squad director, David Ayer, also announced he had made the director’s cut for his Will Smith starrer film. While it was never released, the director teased the possibilities in August.
Since the DC fans got to know about the Ayer Cut, they have been eagerly waiting to see it. They want to know the difference between the Ayer Cut and the studio release. Months before the director gave an exciting update about the potential release, the Hollywood mogul’s statement fueled fans’ desires.
What does Will Smith think about the Ayer Cut?

Margot Robbie, Will Smith, and others made a great team in the 2016 film, Suicide Squad. Despite receiving mixed reviews, fans eagerly wanted to see the director’s cut and have been appealing for the same. However, when the Men in Black actor was asked about his opinion in March 2022, he expressed his excitement as well. He said, “I’m into it. I’d love to see it. I love that world. I love what was created in both versions.”
He admitted there were many things about the film that were on the floor. However, he would absolutely love to see the Ayer Cut. The 2016 film is about a supervillain/anti-hero team of the same name. Amanda Waller, the leader of a secret government agency, enlists jailed supervillains to perform a dangerous black ops mission. It is to save the world from a powerful threat in exchange for reduced sentences.
James Gunn also created his version of the DC story in 2021, The Suicide Squad. Despite the 2021 film’s unique take on the original story, Ayer appreciated Gunn’s work. He considered Gunn’s take on the story brilliant. Now, as James Gunn is the new DC boss, he gets to decide if he would allow the Ayer Cut’s release. When fans had a lot of questions in mind, David Ayer gave a major statement in August 2023.
What did the Suicide Squad director say about The Ayer Cut release?
The 2016 version of the fan-favorite film falls under the old projects of the new DC management. While fans have been continuously pointing out the shortcomings of Ayer’s film, a handful of people want to know when they will get to see his version. To answer fans’ questions, the 55-year-old director took to his X (formerly Twitter) and acknowledged the delay. In his explanation, he also wrote, “And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared.”

After giving hope to fans, he also extended his support for Gunn’s upcoming projects. Back in March 2023, David Ayer slammed Warner Bros. and fueled the movement initiated by fans. Now, all they have to do is wait for the word from the Guardians of the Galaxy director.
