Ever since the news of Matthew Perry’s demise broke, the world has been finding ways to celebrate the enduring charm of his performance. From witty one-liners to unforgettable situations, here are 7 of the sitcom’s most memorable moments that showcase Chandler’s wit and comedic brilliance.
The One with the Blackout
In the first season of the show, fans were introduced to Matthew Perry’s humor and sarcastic wit. By episode seven, the star got his own time in the spotlight. The episode depicted the character being stuck in an ATM vestibule during a city-wide blackout with Victoria’s Secret model, Jill Goodacre. While their interaction left everyone in splits, it was Chandler’s inner monologue that was the highlight.
From self-depreciatory jokes to his flustered reaction to being trapped with a model, the episode brought the character’s humor to the center of the show. In fact, when the model asked Bing if he wanted a piece of gum, the response was like no other. In a fit of nervousness, he ended up responding with, “Gum would be perfection,” which has not been forgotten after all these years.
The Friends episode aired back in 1994 and still leaves viewers snickering at Matthew Perry’s portrayal of the character.
The One After the Super Bowl: Part 2
Back in 1996, the world got to see Matthew Perry share the Friends stage with the stunning Julia Roberts. Her character, Susie Moss, was a blast from the past for Chandler as they had once gone to elementary school together. While she initially seemed interested in going out on a date with the character, it soon turned into her exacting her revenge on him.
After a brief flirty interaction between the two, they end up heading to a bathroom stall to spend some time together. However, it ends with Julia Roberts stealing his clothes and leaving him to walk out of the bathroom naked. While it was hilarious to watch, Chandler’s facial expressions throughout the episode left all his fans howling with laughter.
In real life, the two dated for a bit but ultimately ended their romance. The hilarious episode was part of the second season and was initially split into a two-parter which fell under 12 and 13.
The One Where Chandler Can’t Remember Which Sister
In season 3 episode 11, antics and humor are in full swing as Chandler Bing grapples with a rather awkward and hilarious situation. During his roommate, Joey’s birthday, the comedian ends up getting a little too drunk. He even sleeps with one of Matt LeBlanc’s character’s sisters. As every Friends fan has seen, Joey is extremely protective when it comes to his 7 siblings.
So understandably, he does not react well to Chandler’s revelation. The confusion sets in when the character decides to save himself from Joey’s wrath by saying that he has fallen in love. Unfortunately for him, he is just not sure about which sister he fooled around with. At the end, the drama unfolds in the stairway with everyone present. However, that is when Bing makes it worse for himself by kissing the wrong sister.
The episode showed the audience why controlled drinking around people you do not know too well was extremely important. However, they managed to add the right dose of humor to it with Matthew Perry’s character.
The One at the Beach
While this episode centered around Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer characters, Rachel and Ross, fans got to see a different side of Chandler in this one. This was the first time that the world saw the character shoot his shot with Courteney Cox’s Monica. While her character was feeling down in the dumps for being single, Bing stepped up and offered to be her boyfriend if nothing else worked out.
Although Monica initially takes it as a joke and can not wrap her head around the idea of them getting together, it eventually works out. The episode gave fans a peek at the more loving and boyfriend-material side of the character which no one had seen before thanks to his on-again off-again relationship with Janice.
The episode aired in season 3 and was the final episode of the season, which only left fans wondering if the next season could bring the two characters together.
The One with the Cuffs
While Chandler’s dating history before Monica was not that long, he went out with some pretty memorable women. Although they might not all be remembered for the right reasons. In season 4, episode 3, viewers got to see him in a “relationship” with Rachel’s boss, Joanna. While he was already warned by his friend, the character goes ahead and hooks up with the boss.
For him, it may have just been a hookup however, that was not how she saw it. Days after their date, Joanna continues waiting for Chandler to call her until she can not take it anymore and asks Rachel what went wrong. While Jennifer Aniston’s character tells Matthew Perry that he has to break it off, he does not listen. Unfortunately for him, he gets caught by his friend as he is handcuffed to a cupboard in her boss’ office.
Although Rachel could have helped him out of the awkward situation, she let him stew in the consequences that he created for himself.
The One With the Proposal
Chandler Bing might be known for his sarcasm and humor, but fans got to see a different side of the character with Courteney Cox’s Monica. While the two had practically grown up around each other, the friendship ended up blossoming into love. After various failed attempts at asking his future bride to marry him, he thought he may have ruined it all, only to walk into a beautiful surprise.
Chandler walks into a candlelit apartment to find Monica waiting for him. After being tired of waiting for him to pop the question, she went down on her knees to ask him herself. However, with the emotions running high, she struggles to get the words out. That is when Matthew Perry’s character steps up and asks her the question she has been waiting a lifetime for.
While the episode still brings fans all across the world to tears, it showed everyone that Chandler Bing was not just a funny man.

In the last episode of the final season of Friends, fans were already teary-eyed because they had to say their goodbyes. However, Chandler may have added to it throughout the episode. From watching the joker of the group finally becoming a father to his conversation with Joey about having his own room at Monica and his new place, the character wrapped up the whole series perfectly.
In fact, he also said the last line in the series that also made viewers let out a little laugh. After the group leaves their keys to the apartment on the counter, Rachel suggests a cup of coffee before the new parents have to leave. While years of watching the show had people knowing that they would wind up at Central Perk to round out the era, Chandler added a lighter tone to the episode by ending it with the seemingly innocent question of “where.”
