In a recent exclusive interview on the Today Show, Marta Kauffman and David Crane opened up about their final conversations with the star. The conversation has taken place only 2 short weeks before his death.
Kauffman recalled that Perry seemed “happy and chipper” and “was in a really good place.” She also went on to say that that was the reason why “it seems so unfair” that it was his time to go. The creator also said that she was in “utter shock” when she heard the news and the first thing she did was “text him.” While it may have taken some time to set in that he would not be responding to her text, once it did, she just felt a “deep sadness.”
While the Friends creators had fans all over the world crying with their revelations, Marta Kauffman also addressed the question of whether his death could have been caused by an overdose.
Marta Kauffman believes Matthew Perry found his purpose
In the interview, Marta Kauffman said that Matthew Perry had “seemed better” than she had seen him in a long while. She revealed that he was “emotionally in a good place” and had “quit smoking.” However, she also addressed the elephant in the room and clarified that he was “sober” and had learned things about himself throughout his addiction journey. In fact, she revealed that he had even found his “purpose” after years of searching.

Kauffman went on to say that Perry had wanted “to help other addicts,” as he had spent so much time trying to figure out how to stop himself. He even wrote a memoir that detailed his struggles with addiction and his past traumas. It is titled Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. While the world may be missing the incredible actor, at least he has left fans with many things to remember him by.
