Actors do what the rest of the world cannot—defy time. Their on-screen appearances do not wait for the future nor rely on time machines. And even when the shutterbugs are motionless, endurance remains the priority, irrespective of positive or negative. After Blake Lively’s blockbuster lap landed her in a legal bullfight with Justin Baldoni, every step from her camp has been viewed as a deliberate attempt to leap ahead of the controversies. But when Ryan Reynolds conjured the legal ghosts at SNL’s 50th celebration in jest, Dana Carvey and Lorne Michaels kept the conversation flowing like there was no tomorrow.

In fact, Reynolds’ Baldoni joke had an overtime clause, proving that neither stardom nor slip-ups clock out early in Tinseltown.

In a recent appearance on his Fly on the Wall podcast, Dana Carvey revealed having shared constant text messages with Lorne Michaels after the SNL50 celebrations where Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively dropped jaws with their public appearance. But Reynolds took a step ahead, summoning Lively and Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit hilariously, leaving Carvey wishing he could be there. Carvey wanted to compliment Michaels on Tom Hanks’ sketch and Steve Martin’s monologue, but it all circled back to Reynolds’ jest.

During a Q&A segment with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the SNL 50 Anniversary Special, Reynolds did not hold back on poking fun at the highly publicized legal controversy between his wife and Baldoni. Carvey remains unsure about the Canadian’s stance but is convinced “they have deep pockets.” The former did not attend the ceremony because of the flu but told his co-host, David Spade, that he would love to hear Baldoni’s side of the story and have him on his podcast.

On Tuesday’s Fifi, Fev, and Nick podcast, the cue card holder Wally Feresten shared, Reynolds pitched the change and the rehearsal line was different. “We wouldn’t do anything too controversial unless they were in on it,” Feresten claimed. However, an SNL spokesperson denied the claims, citing he is not a credited writer for the show or a part of the creative process. Additionally, a source close to Reynolds said the opening jest was written by SNL and never changed, and the follow-up one was rewritten in the rehearsals.
