Ryan Reynolds Self Assigns “parent of the year” Award After His Clash With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Co-Star and Director Over R-Rating

As Deadpool & Wolverine brings the era of blockbusters back on the coattails of the MCU, there remains a lot more to ponder than merely the fate of Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth and the clawed-out Wolverine. While conventionally Deadpool brings a cork-less bottle of foul-mouthed witty quips, being the first of the R-rated movies from Marvel's catalog, the chances are larger-than-life that the comic factor will intensify with the merciless meta-jokes. Recently, Ryan Reynolds divulged in a heated reasoning session with his co-star and director only to honor himself with the Parent of the Year award by the end.

The trio conflicted on who to bring and who not to, bearing in mind it is an R-rated movie.

Ryan Reynolds, the father of four, is generating parental envy among children as the release of Deadpool & Wolverine approaches. With less than two weeks until the film hits theaters, Reynolds recently joined Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy in an interview with Variety, vying for the title of "Parent of the Year". Reynolds shared snippets of the interview on his Instagram story, where the trio debated the appropriate age for viewing the film. Retrospecting the film's R-rated content, Levy issued a caution against young audiences watching it.

Despite Levy's concerns, Reynolds, known for his super leniency, argued in favor of younger viewers experiencing the film, citing the popularity of previous Deadpool movies and emphasizing that Deadpool & Wolverine encapsulate essential elements from those films. Reynolds clarified that the R-rating is not gratuitous but reflects the character's “crass” nature. However, Jackman sided with Levy, advocating for a responsible approach and suggesting that fans refrain from bringing toddlers under the age of three to the movie.

With Deadpool & Wolverine set to deliver what Hugh Jackman now describes as a romantic comedy, the anticipation is high for MCU’s first R-rated movie. Ryan Reynolds, Jackman, and Shawn Levy have shared differing views on the appropriate audience for the film, while Marvel boss Kevin Feige offered a balanced perspective, emphasizing parental guidance in his interview with Variety. “It may seem strange to say, but it is an immensely wholesome movie—with a lot of bad words and gore,” Feige told the publication.

Even though this film is expected to revitalize Marvel's release and box office performance, having earned the title of Marvel Jesus, with Reynolds' confidence and Feige's thoughtful stance, it looks like it is all set to dominate in 2024. While its R-rating might deter some young viewers, the filmmakers, especially Reynolds, have provided ample reasons for it to be on their watch list just as much as any adults, making a strong case for being Dad of the Year.
