Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney just played their own version of the Ted Lasso with the club they co-own, Wrexham AFC. They pulled it up from rock bottom, giving it the much-deserving spot after 15-year-long years of sitting in the non-league stands. Not just the promotion to the league status, but lifting the spirits of everybody worked wonders too. And with the team spirit stronger than ever, Paul Mullin signing back and completing this dream team has landed the football club where it is now. But the ladder to success seldom comes smooth. And whatever uneven edges it scratched weren’t received very lightly. 

The dreamy run was not as loved by the climate activists and this is why the club faced heavy criticism.

BBC Sports published the original findings of the flights taken by the team during their games. Although international destinations don’t have any other options except air journeys, the real problem was the domestic flights taken for the matches. The 16 flights taken to and fro from the home base in Manchester were for mere non-league games. The article by Businesslend reported that the local climate activists were very upset by the findings, citing how more eco-friendly ways could have been adopted by Hollywood owners. 

The study by BBC also found that the average flight timings were 43.5 minutes only, springing the question of whether it was an unnecessary luxury. And even though air journey for domestic games is effective time management, Pledgeball’s Katie Cross said how environmental sustainability should be kept in mind during decision-making.  

Meanwhile, other business leaders in the area of football had more to say about football and defend the Hollywood club owners. 

Leaders rush to support amidst the flak

The marketing campaign group Fossil Free Football’s Frank talked about how football was a game whose best interest lies in advocating climate change. And that football players should be stopped from promoting harmful practices. The Secretary of State for Wales, T C Davis, came to their rescue and defended the club and the owners. He gave the club credit for improving so much over the last few years and that he was not going to “knock them down.”

He said that owners and the club members were aware of climate change and that they would be doing their best to be mindful of it, adding they are doing a “great job.” And wonderful job they have done: From Welcome to Wrexham to the Manchester United win, the club has come a long way.
