Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy Put Fan Favorite ‘Free Guy’ Sequel on Hold, While Chasing MCU Ambitions
Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy have truly shaken the MCU. And with the blockbuster success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Marvel Studios would be nuts to let go of this partnership. After reviving the MCU, or as they say, Reynolds and Levy are milking every drop of this momentum to make Deadpool even more iconic among the superhero heavyweights in the MCU. But amidst these ambitions, it seems that the creative duo is putting aside that one film that kicked off this lucrative partnership in the first place- Free Guy.
A 20th Century Studios executive recently dropped an update on the Free Guy sequel, which might be disappointing for fans of the 2021 film.

Steve Asbell recently sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, during which he offered updates on many of the studio’s projects, including Free Guy 2. Asbell confirmed that there is no news on the highly anticipated sequel, as both Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy have yet to “come up with an idea.” The executive added, “They’re just busy.” The sequel talks have been going strong ever since the 2021 film became a box-office hit.
Reynolds and Levy, however, have a lot on their plates at the moment. Reynolds has several other projects lined up while also juggling his various business ventures. As for Levy, he is busy working on the fifth and final season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, where he serves as both an executive producer and a director. The 56-year-old director has also talked about Free Guy 2 in his previous interviews.
Levy mentioned that there is a big obstacle standing in the way of Free Guy 2, which relates to the biggest movie of 2023- Barbie.

Barbie and Free Guy share some similarities in their plots, as both movies focus on a fictional character in an imaginary world coming to self-awareness. During an interview with Collider, Shawn Levy discussed that Free Guy 2 would need to stand apart from the Greta Gerwig movie due to the overlap in the themes of both films. And by now, Ryan Reynolds knows how risky it is to replicate anything Barbie-related.
Levy also mentioned to Wired last year that Free Guy 2 is “a big maybe.” However, if it does get made, it would certainly make both Ryan Reynolds and him happy. Still, given their packed schedules and the pressure to make a mark in the MCU, it is tough to say if the duo will be able to find time for any other franchise at this point.
