Over the past two years, Wrexham’s name has become synonymous with its owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The Hollywood duo purchased the Red Dragons back in 2020. Since then, the oldest Welsh side has been riding the waves under Reynolds and McElhenney. Owing to its newfound glory and the global rise to fame, it has become almost impossible for one to not know of Wrexham.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have overcome a series of hurdles to take the Red Dragons where it is today. However, as the club continues to strive and thrive in the Second Division, a shocking update has surfaced online.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney might have to rename Wrexham. Shocking as it may sound, the Hollywood stars might have to rename their dear club because of an ongoing language battle in Wales. As per The Sun, Linguist Mihangel ap Rhisiart filed a petition calling for the renaming of existing Welsh cities from their existing English versions. Interestingly, the petition has gained heat with over 1300 signatures and is likely to be presented in front of the Welsh parliament. If the petition bears fruit, Wrexham will be renamed to Wrecsam, the same as the city’s title in the Welsh language.

While there are a handful of cities that might have to undergo the change, Wrexham will surely be the most affected. Other teams such as Swansea, Cardiff City, and Newport County steer clear of the uncertainty, since these clubs have very different Welsh names in comparison to their English ones. Meanwhile, the difference between Wrexham and its Welsh name is within a letter or two range, making it a convincing case for a rename under the government’s name standardization guidelines.
