Ryan Coogler in Disbelief Following ‘Sinners’ Massive Success- “When I think about it, when I…”

In the smoke-choked kitchen of WWI veterans, Ryan Coogler stirred the pot and concocted a blood-spiced brew with Sinners. Little did this cinematic chef know that the final dish would have customers lining up for seconds and thirds. He took a daring bite out of convention, plating up this horror feast long before spooky season took its usual seat at the table. But Sinners proved one thing loud and clear: even an off-season serving, when cooked right, can satisfy the appetite for thrills.

As the reviews pour in like fine wine, Coogler, however, finds himself standing in the pantry in disbelief—pinching himself and wondering how his off-menu experiment turned into a Michelin star dish.

When Ryan Coogler gave the vampires a seat at his cinematic table, the box office licked up Sinners like icing on the blockbuster cake. Although Coogler is on cloud nine, in a conversation with Forbes following Sinners taking the top spot of the domestic box office post-COVID-19 this past weekend, he finally landed on Earth, still in disbelief. “It is bizarre, but when I think about it, when I take my feelings out of it, I’m not surprised,” he said.

Coogler continued that it might take a minute or two to reckon that Sinners is #1. It is not like he has not seen a box office success like this; Space Jam was #1 during the pandemic. However, Coogler probably never had a moment of epiphany like he had with Sinners. While Coogler’s ambivalence is understandable, he clarified, “I have all the faith in the world in these two,” speaking of his co-producers Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

Sev Ohanian added to Ryan Coogler’s point, revealing how Sinners is a culmination of everything the trio learnt before.

Sev Ohanian explains the vision of Sinners with Ryan Coogler

At the Sinners seat of Forbes, Ryan Coogler was not shy of admitting that when he, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian put their minds onto something, “good things tend to happen.” It has happened before. However, Sinners, Ohanian explains, "represents the biggest possible execution we basically learned.” In fact, he believes this is exactly what they want to deliver via Proximity Media in everything that follows.

Ohanian continued that above everything else, the trio believes in cinematic experience. And here onwards, that is their only aim of deliverance. Although the creators have given plenty of reasons to punch the ticket and watch Sinners, Sinners gave them more than one reason to keep the cinematic streak alive. While Sinners is no musical, at least by definition, it is indeed music to the box office ears.
