Oppenheimer is at its awards rush, sweeping award after another. So it wasn’t a surprise when the Christopher Nolan masterpiece bagged four nominations including Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Robert Downey Jr.), Cast in a Motion Picture, Female Actor in a Supporting Role (Emily Blunt), and Male Actor in a Leading Role (Cillian Murphy) at SAG 2024. What did shock many was when Blunt lost the supporting role award to Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) but all is not lost for the biographical movie.

Robert Downey Jr. cements his Oscar chances with SAG 2024 win

2024 seems to be Oppenheimer’s year, not that 2023 was any different with the anticipated release. But this year has proven lucky for the Nolan movie as it bagged awards left, right and center. The SAG 2024 didn’t prove to be any different. The film unexpectedly lost Emily Blunt’s nomination for the Supporting Actor role. Blunt, who isn’t new to a SAG snub after losing the Outstanding Actress award for The English last year, was soon avenged by her co-star Robert Downey Jr.

Moments after Blunt’s loss, the Downey Jr. walked up to the stage to receive his Supporting Role award with a speech befitting his famous Marvel role, Ironman. Thanking his wife along with “otherwise very talented artists,” the 58-year-old picked up The Actor, cementing his chances in the Oscars 2024 race if the precedence of SAG winners winning the Academy Award is any indication.

Clearly, it was a night defined by the struggle of the SAG members and a monumental event in light of last year’s SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. But the Oppenhomies stole the spotlight with an award sweep.

Oppenheimer clinched a winning night at SAG 2024

SAG 2024 was historic from the get-go, being the first award show to stream on Netflix. But Oppenheimer and team only added to the night’s highlights. Apart from Female Actor in Supporting Role, the Nolan directorial managed to win its other nominations, including the first Irish win at SAG with Cillian Murphy’s Leading Actor award.

While the winning night is another feather to the film’s achievements this year, the win also acts as a strong indicator of an Oscar sweep. At the moment, Oppenheimer received 13 nods from the Academy, including three out of the big five categories: Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. In a few weeks’ time, on March 10th, the world will know if the awards favorite continues its winning streak.
