From heartbreak hiatuses to a full-blown superstar, Selena Gomez has rocketed into her true potential this year, ready to carve her name in the stars. Fresh off her historic Best Actress win at Cannes, she snagged her first acting Emmy nomination for her sharp, snarky portrayal of Mabel Mora in Only Murders in the Building. With her show scoring a mind-blowing 21 nominations, the 2024 Emmys are practically gift-wrapped for Hulu. But what is an award season without a juicy plot twist? Instead of preparing the victory anthems, Gomez and her squad are bracing for the ultimate curveball: an Emmy snub!

With the big event just around the corner, the big question is, why?

Why are Selena Gomez and her Only Murders in the Building crew gearing up to lose Emmy?

Selena Gomez is on the brink of making Emmy history with her first-ever acting nod for Only Murders in the Building. It is not just her, though—the Only Murders crew as a whole has a shot at keeping the wins rolling in. But in true Gomez fashion, when she, Steve Martin, and Martin Short found themselves chilling on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, they were busy perfecting one thing: their "losing face".

As they pondered their strong chances of winning, Fallon threw in a curveball, asking if they had been rehearsing their "losing faces" just in case things did not go their way. Cue the theatrics! Fallon, ever the improv king, declared, “…and the Emmy goes to… not Selena Gomez” and without missing a beat, the newly crowned billionaire dialed up the drama, instantly shifting from a victorious grin to a hilariously over-the-top “losing face,” complete with exaggerated gasps and slow claps.

When Selena Gomez showcased her acting chops on The Tonight Show, the audience was already in stitches from that alone. Her Only Murders in the Building co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short, were not about to let Gomez steal the spotlight just yet. Steve Martin cracked everyone up by clutching his chest, giving a mock salute with a painfully fake smile, milking the moment with peak drama.

When it came to Martin Short’s turn, though, he was not playing around either. Forget subtlety; he went into full theater mode, calling on the acting gods, and in a flash, his face morphed from shock to over-the-top sobbing. With his hands dramatically over his head, he cried out, “Mama, I let you down!”. Fallon might have tossed around what-ifs, but if the Emmy folks got even a peek at those hilarious "losing faces," that trophy would be as good as theirs.
