Prince Harry’s Spare Ghostwriter Once Weighed in on How “Facts were wretched out of context and complex emotions reduced to idiocy” Post the Memoir Premiere
Forever regarded as the black sheep of the family, Prince Harry was never something the place walls could contain within themselves. Being a groundbreaking force of change, the Duke of Sussex has always been vocal about pretty much everything happening in his life. Be it childhood trauma or adolescent struggles, we now know it all. All of it is rooted in his record-breaking memoir, Spare, which laid bare the shocking details of the royals that had always been masked with a show of grandeur and fame.
Having received polarizing reactions, the Duke’s ghostwriter who framed the royal’s stories has also come into much limelight. Way before the memoir even hit the shelves, the controversies from the leaked excerpt had already created quite a fuss.

Weighing on the dramatic unfolding of events, JR Moehringer, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, said what it was like during the initial days of Spare release. The publications which got hold of the excerpts misrepresented the facts as per Moehringer. As was reported by the New Yorker, back in May, the writer penned how the British press converted the Book to a Tabloid fixation.
“Facts were wrenched out of context, complex emotions were reduced to cartoonish idiocy, innocent passages were hyped into outrages—and there were so many falsehoods,” wrote the Ghostwriter in his article. Not only did they feed the blatant lies to the frenzy, but the media also climbed down Moehringer’s throat.

Writing in the article, he recalled how he would be stalked by paps in the middle of the street even when he had his kids with him. In another instance, there were journalists popping up at his window when he would work late at night. “The British press now converted the book into their native tongue, that jabberwocky of bonkers hot takes and classist snark,” he said.
Although his article starts with the petty arguments he had with the Duke, he then knew where it came from. The frenzied mob that targeted him and his family had distressed him. However, grappling with the press and media in that intense chaos helped him understand the Duke better. While the press was exploiting the book, there were people who actually read the book and not “Murdoched chunks laced with poison,” wrote JR Moehringer.
