The Duke of Sussex, otherwise known as the royal gone rogue, has never made his tremendous love for his mother any secret. Forever walking in her footsteps, Prince Harry loves basking in the love and affection of the People’s princess. Although treated as an outcast in his own family, the Duke never really found himself alone. By the time the loss of Princess Diana proved damning to him, entered the love of his life, Meghan Markle.

And in Markle, Prince Harry saw glimpses of his mother, not because of his infinite love, but because the royal women actually share a few similarities between their lives. 

Princess Diana and Meghan Markle shared troubled childhood 

According to OK! magazine, Tessa Dunlop, a royal historian, said, the bond with the Duchess just got better over time since “Meghan feels she relates to Princess Diana”. Both the Duchess and Princess Diana, “came from places of pain in terms of their childhood”, she added. Lady Diana’s parents went through an extremely public divorce and their daughter had to struggle through the drastically changing dynamics of their family. 

Similar was the ordeal with the Californian-bred Meghan Markle, whose parents separated when she was just a child. Markle still carries the embers of her broken family as she recited the poem she wrote as a child of two divorced parents in the Netflix Harry & Meghan docuseries. However, not just through shared disturbed childhood, but also with problems they faced marrying into the royal family intertwined their lives together. 

Both the Duchess and the Princess were treated as an outsider

As for the Duke, growing up as someone who has always felt quite dissociated with his own family, he would closely understand what first his mother, and then his wife, had to go through. Dunlop further shared saying, “Diana and Meghan both identified as outsiders within the Royal Family.” The grotesque misalliance soon turned into an ugly, heartbreaking, widely frowned upon divorce before the world. 

Following the split, the royal sphere then “forced” Princess Diana to “find a path outside the Royal family” and so she did. Needless to say, that is exactly the case with her youngest son- and daughter-in-law, following their treacherous experience at Buckingham. It is much like what “Harry and Meghan have both done since stepping down as senior royals and moving their family to LA,” concluded the historian.
