Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, through their Archewell Foundation, have always made it a point to provide humanitarian aid to those in need. Since July 2023, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been at the forefront of addressing social isolation among Afghan women. They also received a special award for supporting the Human First Coalition, which is currently one of the most prominent humanitarian groups for delivering life-saving aid in Afghanistan. 

Taking their commitment to Afghanistan's refugees a step further, Markle and Prince Harry, through their non-profit charity organization, have now introduced community activities to help refugee women find their way and establish a sense of belonging in a new land.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry helped several local programs for Afghan immigrants and refugees get some major national attention. Recently, they funded a new group activity for Afghan refugee women in Milwaukee to foster a more inclusive and connected community. Under this program, several refugee women and children come together at Hamilton High School on Milwaukee’s south side for Restorative Sewing Circles, where they sew, share meals, and exchange stories (via Marquette Today).

Apart from helping women build connections, the program also supports their children in learning English. Since the Taliban re-established unofficial control in 2021, the United States has welcomed over 90,000 Afghan refugees through Operation Allies Welcome. Last year, the Sussexes’ Archewell Foundation introduced their women-focused initiative to support Afghan refugees, named The Welcome Project.

Through this project, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have so far taken several steps to make the displaced Afghan women's lives easier. 

The Welcome Project idea seemingly came about when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry visited a military base in New Jersey in 2021 and met Afghan families living there. According to an Archewell report from last year, the project has already helped around 237 women through 11 active programs across the U.S. The report also said that The Welcome Project will open doors for education and job opportunities.

Helping Afghan women fleeing the Taliban could also be a special cause for Prince Harry, especially since he did two tours in Afghanistan with the British armed forces. Thanks to the generosity of donors and the advocacy of the Californian royals, thousands of vulnerable and isolated refugees have now found a new home in America.
