Peter Dinklage and Elijah Woods' Forgotten 2021 Flick Finally Gets a Release Plan for 2025
It has been almost two years since The Toxic Avenger reboot debuted at Fantastic Fest, and fans have eagerly awaited the film's big release. The early reactions to the reboot were very positive, but its journey to a theatrical release has not been easy for this cult classic reimagining. In September 2023, after premiering as the opening film at Fantastic Fest, the movie also played at Beyond Fest later that month. By October, it had ventured overseas for an international debut at the Sitges Film Festival.
Now, after circulating in the festival circuit, The Toxic Avenger, starring Peter Dinklage and Elijah Wood, is finally getting a theatrical release.

The long-delayed Toxic Avenger reboot is officially headed to theaters. Cineverse announced on Tuesday that the film will hit the big screen later this year in an unrated wide release. Unfortunately, fans will have to hold on a little longer for the exact release date, as that has not been revealed yet. Director Macon Blair shared his excitement about the news in a statement to Variety, saying he is thrilled that fans will finally get to experience the movie in theaters. He described the reboot as a “fun, rowdy movie” that is perfect for a theater full of people.
This new version of the 1984 film stars Kevin Bacon, Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, and Taylour Paige alongside Dinklage and Wood. For those unfamiliar with the original, the story follows a janitor who gets exposed to toxic waste, turning him into a deformed but powerful superhero. He then sets out on a quest for revenge. While the reboot will stick to the basic storyline, it will also be introducing a few changes.
One of the most noticeable changes the new iteration of the hero will have is the fact that the film received an R-rating, which director Macon Blair did not expect to be approved.
Macon Blair had to fight for The Toxic Avengers' approval
The Toxic Avenger reboot is unapologetically R-rated. Earlier rumors suggested the studio might aim for a tamer PG-13 rating, but director Macon Blair had other ideas. During an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Blair shared that he was surprised the R-rating even got approved. Blair explained that he fought hard for the studio to green light this version of the film, and his persistence paid off.

The R-rating is crucial for this reboot because it allows the movie to fully embrace its over-the-top violence and dark comedy. It includes strong violence and gore, language throughout, sexual references, and brief graphic nudity. These elements were essential for the reboot to capture the wild, chaotic energy fans expect from The Toxic Avenger. Now all that is left is the official release date of one of the most anticipated 2025 reboots. Until then, fans will just have to sit tight and keep an eye out for the big announcement.
