Ever since Prince Harry’s memoir, ‘Spare’, was released, there were many controversies surrounding the same. The Prince openly discussed his use of drugs to cope with the grief of her mother’s death, his experience of Afghanistan tours, and how members of the royal family were unwelcoming to her wife, Meghan Markle. Despite all the controversial information the memoir revealed, it still became a hit. Fans of the Prince empathized with his position in the royal family and were on his more than ever.
But how did the memoir become the fastest-selling non–fiction and secured its place in the Guinness Book of World Records? It’s all because of the efforts of the ghostwriter.

In a recent article published by The New Yorker, the memoir’s ghostwriter J. R. Moehringer has made major revelations. In the piece written by Moehringer himself, he described what went behind the memoir’s making. He shared that Prince Harry and he used to sit for late-night Zoom call sessions to make edits to the piece. He started the piece by describing how Prince Harry came to a difficult passage while editing a part.
Both of them disagreed over an incident where the Prince was tortured as a part of a military exercise. Prince Harry wanted to include a clever response that he gave to a group of fellow British soldiers who brought up his deceased mother, Princess Diana. Moehringer didn’t want to include the same as it would have deviated from the essence of the book. Prince Harry agreed but explained that he wanted to include the same as “people had always belittled him for his intellectual abilities” and he wanted to show that he “had his wits about him.”
Despite their disagreements, both Prince Harry and Moehringer found a friend in each other.

When Moehringer and Prince Harry bonded over the loss of their mothers
In the article, Moehringer also described that both of them bonded well with each other because of the loss of their mothers. Princess Diana had died twenty-three years before their first conversation, and the ghostwriter’s mother, Dorothy Moehringer, had just died, and their griefs felt equally fresh. He described that Harry’s grief was one of the main reasons that convinced him to ghostwrite the memoir.
