Patrick Schwarzenegger Is All in for a ‘Terminator’ Reboot and Doesn’t Mind Taking Over From His Dad
James Cameron wants to revive the iconic Terminator franchise that first captivated audiences in 1984. The Terminator, which became a sleeper success and won millions over in the '80s, could not recreate the same magic with its subsequent sequels and reboots. Especially after Arnold Schwarzenegger’s exit, the franchise was sent into a period of dormancy and failed to live up to the initial acclaim. Nonetheless, the creator is actively developing a Terminator 7 script and may have already found Terminator's successor.
Patrick Schwarzenegger has recently hinted at a wish to reboot his father’s iconic character in James Cameron's upcoming project.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron mentioned the new Terminator project he has been working on. However, the filmmaker strictly maintained his mum regarding any details of the project. Cameron said, “It’s totally classified.” The 69-year-old added, “I don’t want to have to send out a potentially dangerous robotic agent if you were to talk about it.” Reacting to the statement, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son, Patrick Schwarzenegger, took to X, saying, “Just reboot it.”
When actor and director Stephen Ford noticed Patrick Schwarzenegger’s tweet, he responded, saying, “Only if you're in it.” Without denying the offer, the Gen V actor replied, “Talk to James.” James Cameron plans to align the new Terminator project with today’s AI and technology-drenched world. And while the original filmmaker’s involvement adds considerable weight to the project, there are still bumps in the road.
For one, Terminator 7 has not been officially green-lit yet, despite James Cameron’s excitement. And there are other issues that might stand in the way of Cameron’s dream to revive the franchise.

The Terminator franchise has a complicated rights history, and James Cameron’s creative control is not without limits. With so many legal and intellectual property hurdles, getting Terminator 7 off the ground could be very challenging. Right now, the project is stuck in the pre-production and writing stages and has not made it onto any studio’s production schedule. To add to the challenge, the cast is not too excited about coming back either.
Linda Hamilton, who played Sarah Connor four decades ago, has already said she is not interested in reprising her role. And from what it seems, neither is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Given such problems in the production, Patrick Schwarzenegger reprising his father’s role as the Terminator could actually help the reboot get some much-needed buzz, making it possible for Cameron to revive the franchise.
