As Oppenheimer walks in towards the 96th Oscars with an active streak of bagging awards, everyone has eyes on the crew and their outstanding efforts. Like its box office mania, the movie is still strutting with authority by shattering every record from one award ceremony to another. Since the movie has left no debates untouched with its mammoth reception, even Disney CEO Bob Iger could not help but praise its worth. However, in an interesting turn of events, his simultaneous praise while dismissing “Marvel fatigue” invited backlash.

On Tuesday, Iger was interviewed at a Morgan Stanley conference regarding his efforts to revitalize the film industry. Pressing on how he had to make “tough calls”, he further pushed back on the idea of “audience fatigue” to praise Oppenheimer’s success and the reason why it is successful. According to Disney’s boss, the audience just really wants “great films” and when one builds it “great”, the audience will come around, just like the box office frenzy of Oppenheimer speaks for itself. For fans, however, the comparison did not sit well.

Iger further continued focusing on how they have reduced the “output of Marvel” to turn around the business after the challenging year for Disney’s movie releases. He said quite explicitly that they have also “killed a few projects” that they did not feel were worthy or “strong enough” to suit the studio revamp.

Although Oppenheimer’s consecutive nods from Golden Globes to SAG make it a compelling example, for MCU fans it became a getaway to point the finger at Disney’s own shortcomings.

Fans take a jibe at Disney CEO after his comments on superhero fatigue

It is no news that the world of cinema has undergone a massive flux after Oppenheimer and Barbie’s successful box office release. But to keep it on a pedestal to dismiss Disney’s sinking slate perhaps is not the ideal justification for MCU fans. As a consequence, supporters could not resist responding to the criticisms with counterarguments by emphasizing Disney’s unintentional admission “to making bad films”.

Even though most fans could hardly hold back their troll sessions, some others did acknowledge his point of view. Yet then, they found it “weird” to compare these extensively different genres and the circumstances of their releases.

As the Marvel enthusiasts unleashed their full-fledged taunt sessions, they also took a tease at Iger for “identifying the problem” and still treading on the glass floors. While in this entire chaos, Oppenheimer emerged superior, the contrast was still too astounding for cinephiles to fathom Iger’s comments. Although fans definitely did not like the tone of his disregard, here is hoping that Marvel can have its turnaround moment in the days to come and fans find their moment of peace.
